BH wins Gulf Coast Classic title

MONT BELVIEU — The Barbers Hill Eagles won the Gulf Coast Classic boys’ division for the first time since 2005 Wednesday beating Cleveland 58-50 to claim the title.

“We came into this tournament coming off three straight losses so this is a pretty big win for us,†Eagles head coach Nathan Toon said. “This is also big for the kids confidence. They are starting to believe in themselves and starting to prove what they can do.

“This tournament means a lot to the people in this town and the kids, especially the seniors, will remember this a long time.â€

Ian Hamlin and Richard Minnick led the way for the Eagles in the game.

Hamlin had 23 points, 10 rebounds and four assists while Minnick had 11 points, four rebounds and three steals.

After Cleveland jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game, the Eagles answered back with a three minute 6-0 run of their own to tie the game back up.

Both teams showed how evenly matched they were after the early runs with the Eagles taking a 13-12 lead into the second quarter.

The Eagles started that frame with a 5-0 run to take an 18-12 lead before Cleveland found their first bucket of the quarter.

The Eagles ran off another spurt after that Cleveland bucket, this time a 6-0 run to stretch their lead to 24-12 with three minutes and 30 seconds left in the half.

Cleveland answered back though and outscored the Eagles 11-1, to go into the locker room down 25-23.

The two teams came out after the break and traded baskets throughout the whole quarter, each scoring 10 points and the Eagles taking a 35-33 into the fourth and deciding quarter.

The Eagles then opened the fourth quarter with another push, this one a 5-0 run to give them a 40-33 lead.

Cleveland didn’t go away easy though after that going on 4-0 run to make it a one-point game.

The two teams traded a pair of two-point baskets after that and then the Eagles used a 4-0 run that Cleveland followed with a 5-0 run of its to close the gap to 48-46

The Eagles scored 10 points after that while holding Cleveland to just four to close the game with the victory.

Kody Mourer, Carson Asbury and Jake Miller also chipped in for the Eagles.

Mourer had seven points and five rebounds, Asbury had six rebounds and Miller had seven points and six rebounds.

The Eagles, who improved to 12-6 on the year with the win, will be back in action Tuesday at C.E. King at 7:30 p.m.
