Several local football standouts not only got it done on the field this past football season, but they were superb in the classroom, making their respective Texas High School Coaches Association State Farm Insurance Academic All-State teams.

In Class 3A, Bridge City’s Grant Encalade and Blake Hubbard made the First Team along with Orangefield’s Josh Juneau. Orangefield’s Alex Edgerley made Honorable Mention while in Class 2A, Deweyville’s Stephen Whitsitt was a First Team selection.

The teams are selected by a point system that awards points for GPA, class rank and SAT or ACT score.

The student-athletes are then placed on teams according to the number of points they have earned. The Elite team represents the highest point total that can be achieved. Criteria required to be nominated is: 1. a senior with an overall GPA of 92 or above, including grades 9-12 and the first six weeks of grade 12; 2. Be a member of the team in good standing at the time of nomination; 3. Be of good moral character. The program is in its eighth year and has steadily grown to over 2,000 applicants.

State Farm Insurance is in its second year as sponsor of the THSCA Academic All-State Football teams.

“State Farm is pleased to partner with the Texas High School Coaches Associationâ€, said Ronnie Vandiver, Marketing Manager for State Farm. “The benefit the students receive by participating in these programs with such great role models is phenomenalâ€, he added.

Other Class 3A picks included Silsbee’s Matthew Deaver (First Team) and Josh Skinner (honorable mention); Hamshire-Fannett’s Cameron Burrell (Second Team) and Hardin-Jefferson’s Joshua Denton (Second Team).

There were a slew of Southeast Texas players on the 2A and 1A Academic squads.

In 2A East Chambers placed Trey Lamert (Second Team), Cale Kennamer (honorable mention), Daniel Renner (honorable mention) and Alfredo Velaguez (honorable mention) on the elite squad. Also making were Kountze’s Carl Gerhard (honorable mention) and Domingo Smith (honorable mention) and Woodville’s Robert Berry (honorable mention) and Jace Cooley (Honorable mention).
