You were close bleed, its Travessa Gant and yes she was very good, play on the Elite 8 Lamar team with Barbara Hickey.  Also on that team was Ramona Jones who I think was from HJ.

I'm probably biased but the best I ever saw was Coach Sims at HJ and I saw her ALOT.She averaged over 32 pts a game in a 4 year high school career and is currently 2nd on the all time scorers list at LU.Had there been a 3-pt line back in the day I don't think anyone would even be close.Girl could pull up from 20 ft and shoot the prettiest jumper you ever looked at.There wasn't a womens pro league at that time or she would have had a different proffession.

I heard the used actual peach baskets back then AND had a big net draped around the court...... ;D

She would drape anything she could find around the court to keep from chasing the ball and we couldn't afford peach baskets ;D ;D

I would say LaQuan Stallworth was the best High School player in State of Texas that came through.  Then look at her accomplishments at Louisiana Tech and what they did.  If it wasn't for her they would have not made it to the Final Four.  3 Time Defensive Player of the Year, All American in High School and played overseas 4 yrs averaging 32 points a game in Israel, 20 in China, 18 in Russia, and 19 in Germany.  That girl was raw.

Next choice Teresa Witherspoon - Look what she did at Tech and in the WNBA and overseas and USA TEAM.

Next in line Tamicha Jackson.

I can think of a couple.  Theresa Witherspoon of West Sabine and Barbara Hickey of Orangefield.  One won a Olympic Gold Medal.  The other went Pro from Lamar.

Thanks for the props but my name shouldn't be on this list and I never went pro :)  I just got a job lol.. but thank you..

Teresa Weatherspoon gets my vote... I played against her twice and both times I was in awe of how good she was.  I "Thought" I had her trapped at half court once.  She did this little spin move and smiled at me as she threw a perfect pass from half court, behind her head, to Venus Lacey who was standing under the goal.  All I could do was shake her hand and say "great pass"..  So, thats my vote ;)

She's the best female player I've ever seen in person. I don't see a lot of girls bb but I knew she was special when dayton and Silsbee used to be in the same district. I remember her shooting with both hands! Crazy!

    • This is good info. It doesn’t really break out for student athletes though. LP & (I think) DP are open enrollment because of the way the towns intertwine. That’s the way it’s been for many years anyway. I assume it still is that way. The kids have a choice after Jr. High to go to either High School because LPISD has elementary schools in DP. As I recall, DP didn’t want to build out more (Robin Hood issues), and so DPISD & LPISD came to an arrangement because LPISD is one of the highest givers to Robin Hood in the state, and it helped both keep more funds in district. Of course, LPISD is open to all. Not just DP, and LPISD is rated well. So, I assume they have kids from elsewhere also. Not positive though. They used to have a lot because—for decades—DeWalt was the only dedicated public school in the GHA that specifically catered to special needs kids. Families from all over enrolled. But, they didn’t participate in extracurricular activities like sports. So, LP’s total enrollment made them 6A. But, they were really a 5A school all along for sports program sake. This is all as best as I can recall from when I was more involved in school issues. I’m sure a lot has changed since then. My kids have been out for 20 years.
    • Our playoff rivalry. They hold a 6-5 edge in the series. I think Newton continues the win streak in a hard fought contest. What say y’all?
    • Has Elmo gotten his aggy premature extension yet?  Pay him already because you guys were exactly right - he really does “get you.” 😂🤣
    • It’s been awhile, but I seem to remember 5 D starters out & 2 O starters out (OL). A big difference is that Simon wasn’t involved yet. He’s totally changed LP’s rushing attack from last year as a bruising, explosive addition to Barnes, Sandolph & Bright. Last year—and early this season—LP was missing that element. Now, Coach Berneathy is not making talented players wait like many other coaches & even his predecessors at LP. If the kid can produce at the varsity level, they’re moved up. And man, has Simon produced! Over 1200 yards & 20 TD’s in less than a full season so far! It’s allowed LP to alternate RB’s where Barnes doesn’t take all the pounding. Barnes and Sandolph are also able to split out as receivers as desired to add threats that weren’t really an option last year. The PNG/LP game was a full-on tilt & good for both squads. I remember Gary Joseph in the end zone giving his son pointers as an extra set of eyes since he’d had experience with LP in past PO matchups. That was a good game. The score wasn’t really indicative of the game. Not sure anyone felt it was over until the final whistle! Good luck to y’all in Cajun Country. Bring back a win for SE Texas. (Yes. La Porte is still SETX. Ha!)
