The Lamar State College-Port Arthur softball team’s spring schedule is four non-conference games shorter today after Baton Rouge Community College announced the end of its softball program.

The Louisiana junior college tried to start a women’s softball program for the past two years, but was unsuccessful in attracting enough academically-eligible athletes to field a team.

An e-mail from BRC coach Cindy Prouty also announced the cancellation of games with schools in its area, and with four schools that compete with Lamar State in Region XIV – Paris Junior College, Galveston College, Alvin Community College, Bossier Parish Community College.

“Once again we had programs with players’ academic progress here at BRCC. So, we do not have enough players to fill our roster,†Prouty said. “This will be our last attempt to start a softball program. I apologize for the inconvenience this causes.â€

Lamar State head coach Vance Edwards said he is trying to reschedule the dates with other teams.

“It’s pretty close to the start of the season, so we may not be able to get any more games,†Edwards said.

The Seahawks open their 2009 campaign at home February 5, with a doubleheader against Temple College.
