Area swimmers get in another tune-up in preparation for district

LAKE JACKSON, TX. — Orange County high school swimmers participated in one of the largest swim meets of the season this past Saturday as the district meet looms ahead.

Eight swimmers from the Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School and Vidor High School swim teams took part in the Brazoswood Invitational at Brazoswood High School last Saturday as dozens of swimmers from nearly 20 schools participated.

Alex Dorman again paced the LC-M team as he made a strong showing in the Boys 200 Yard Freestyle with a 12th place finish in a time of 2:05.95, which was more than three seconds better than his personal best.

Dorman, 15, also placed 16th in the Boys 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:09.39, which is 3.49 seconds faster than his previous personal best.

Vidor swimmer Jarrett Cameron participated in his first ever 200 Yard Intermediate Medley, which requires the competitor to swim 50 Yard intervals of the butterfly stroke, backstroke, breast stroke and freestyle. He placed 19th with a time of 2:40.01.

Cameron, 16, also showcased his speed in the Boys 100 Yard Freestyle as he improved his personal best time by 1.38 seconds with a 24th place finish of 1:02.15 in a field of 44 contestants.

Ashley Mann set a new personal record with 17th place finish in the Girls 200 Yard Intermediate Medley with a time of 3:06.59, an improvement of 6.55 seconds.

Mann, 16, also improved her time in the Girls 50 Yard Freestyle by 0.18 seconds with a time of 32.61 seconds in a 40th place finish in largest girls field of the day.

LC-M’s Chasity Chapman finished with a time of 40.69 and was closely followed by Jessica Cameron of Vidor, who improved her best time by 2.4 seconds with a time of 42.38 seconds. The race was won by Krystan Morrell of Beaumont West Brook in a time of 25.31 seconds.

Chapman placed 38th in the Girls 100 Yard Freestyle with a finish of 1:33.34, while Stephani Dyess of Vidor set a personal best time of 1:54.21 by chopping off nearly five seconds in Saturday’s contest.

Jessica Cameron, 15, finished in 32nd place with a time of 1:52.53 in the Girls 100 Yard Backstroke, and was trailed right behind by Hannah McLendon of LC-M who finished in 1:55.95. Dyess of Vidor improved her time by more than 11 seconds with a new personal best time of 2:26.05.

McLendon, 15, also competed in the Girls 100 Yard Breaststroke for the first time and finished 35th with a time of 2:12.35.

LC-M swimmer Dmitri LaCour, 14, finished in 22nd place in the Boys 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:32.15, but was one of two swimmers disqualified due to a judges decision.

Vidor and Little Cypress-Mauriceville swimmers will now focus on the district swim meet, which will be held on Feb. 5 at Central Middle School in Nederland.
