Bobcats throttle H-F, 70-41

ORANGEFIELD — After dropping their last three non-district games, the Orangefield Bobcats wanted to start District 21-3A on solid footing.

Well, mission accomplished.

The Bobcats placed four players in double figures Friday night as they went on to bury the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns 70-41 at Bobcat Gym.

“We really hit a rough patch at the end of non-district play,†said Bobcat coach Rea Wrinkle. “We wanted to start district play playing with more energy and intensity and the kids came out and did just that tonight.â€

Zach Hayes led the Bobcats 915-9, 1-0) with 23 points, 15 of them coming in the first half. Guard Garrett Granger had 15 points and hit three three-pointers. Guard Tyler Angelle posted 11 points and forward Derrick Evans added 11 points as well.

“I really liked our balance tonight,†said Wrinkle. “All four of those guys are capable of getting into double figures every game. If we can continue to do that, we’ll be able to keep people off balance.â€

The Longhorns (10-13, 0-1) struggled from the opening tip. They managed just two field goals in the first half as they went in at intermission down 29-8.

Orangefield led 17-5 at the end of the first period as Hayes and Granger combined for 15 points.

Hayes tallied five more points in the second period in a 12-3 Orangefield run.

Evans had the hot hand for the Bobcats in the third quarter as he ripped two three-pointers to score nine points in the period.

Angelle bruised the Longhorns for eight of his points in the fourth quarter.

The Bobcats forced the Longhorns into 18 turnovers while they had just seven. The Bobcats hit eight three-pointers, went a solid 20-of-27 from the free-throw line and outrebounded H-F 34-27.

Guard Cory Adams led the Longhorns with 10 points. Logan Johnson had eight points and six rebounds. Jeremy Pinder had eight points while Hagen Daigle added six points and seven rebounds.

Hayes had six rebounds to lead the Bobcats while Casey Sparks and Bryden Smith added five each.

The Bobcats are seeking their second straight playoff berth after placing third in district a year ago and advancing to the second round of the postseason.

They will venture to Hardin-Jefferson next Tuesday.

“Our district is so darn tough, it may be the toughest in the state,†said Wrinkle. “H-J and Silsbee are both in the top 10. West Orange was in the State Tournament just three years ago and Coach (Zack) Quinn has them playing well this year. There’s not much room for error. You have to be willing to play your best each and every time out.â€

the bobcats took it to h-f from the very tip off and never let up. this by far was their best performance of the year and for the first time this season they looked like the playoff team of last year. excellent team ball on both the offensive and defensive ends. it was good to see angelle and evans contribute the way they did tonight for the first time this year. hayes will score his points, but angelle, granger, and evans have to continue the kind of play we saw tonight throughout district play. sparks defensive effort was also key. great job boys and coach wrinkle now lets get ready for h-j. with another effort like tonight who knows what could happen???

I think we'll be at open gym at HJ this summer. Find out what kind of basketball machine you guys have out there. Something is driving yall and I sure hope it's not the manure.
