LamarStatesports Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Lamar State College-Port Arthur freshman forward Adrian Fontenot has been named the Region XIV Player of the Week for Jan. 12-17. The 2008 graduate of Sterling High School in Baytown is Lamar State’s leading scorer and rebounder this season with 15.4 points and 8.57 rebounds per game. Fontenot, who ranked fifth in rebounding and 12th in scoring in Region XIV going into the week, recorded his best effort as a Seahawk with 29 points and 11 rebounds this past Wednesday at home in a losing effort against Lee College. He had 14 points and seven rebounds Saturday to lead Lamar State to its first-ever Division I conference win at Navarro College. Fontenot missed one game with an injury and was suspended for one game early in the season, but hit for double figures and was the team’s leading rebounder in 11 of the 14 games he played. Lamar State head coach Jerre Cole said this is the first time he nominated a player for conference honors in a week that included a loss. “In this case, however, Adrian’s play last week demanded at least some consideration,†Cole said. “His performances have been a reflection of a change in our team's mind-set. We are more concerned with our team’s successes, whereas before we still were holding on to personal goals. The guys recognized Adrian’s ability to help us win, and they are getting him more looks and he is delivering.â€
