KFDM COOP Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 LC-M's Fontenot lifts up team Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — It was a fun day for Little Cypress-Mauriceville junior lifter Maegan Fontenot and her Bear teammates Thursday as LC-M High School hosted the Bear Iron Powerlifting Meet for the first time in years. The Bears and Lady Bears were there along with girls and boys teams from Anahuac, Evadale, Liberty and Kountze. Fontenot, the state champion in the 105-pound Class 4A Division last year, was thrilled about having a home meet. “I love to travel to meets but it’s glad to finally host one,†said Fontenot. ‘Coach (Mack) Malone has done a great job getting this going.†Malone, LC-M’s powerlifting coach, has been proud of his squad thus far this season. “I’ve got 15 kids out, 12 boys and three girls,†said Malone. “They’ve all worked so hard this year. They get better each and every day and that’s what you like to see in powerlifting. I’m just as proud of our three girls as I am of all the boys.†Fontenot has a great run in Lady Bear Iron uniform. Last season at state, she strolled to the 4A state crown in her weight class. Not only that, she was the top lifter in her weight class in all five classifications. She broke the state squat record with a 320-pound lift and later went on to set a state-record total lift of 715 pounds for her division. “I really worked hard to achieve that last year,†said Fontenot. “I’ve moved up in weight class (123-pound division) this year and there’s more challenges ahead because there are so many more competitors in that class.†Fontenot was busy during the Thanksgiving break in late November when she ventured to West Palm Beach in a national meet. She set a new world record for the 114-pound weight class when she squatted 330 pounds. She weighed 110 pounds at the time, meaning she lifted three times her body weight. “I met so many great people at that meet,†said Fontenot. “It’s hard to lose and that’s a lesson I learned because I was so used to winning. I was able to associate with people from all over the world and I learned a lot about myself.†Fontenot loves the sport and the petite LC-M cheerleader wouldn’t change anything in the world as far as competing in the sport. “It’s fun and it helps me stay fit,†said Fontenot. “It breaks certain stereotypes about girls my size. We can compete just as hard and as well as anybody else.†Full results of the LC-M Powerlifting Meet will be in Saturday’s edition of the Leader.
