BRIDGE CITY — Having their mettle tested severely by the Bridge City Cardinals, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs used the shoulders of Donte Green to carry them to a 60-52 District 21-3A victory at Cardinal Gym Friday night.

Green filtered in a game-high 22 points, 13 of them coming in the second half as the Mustangs (18-7, 2-1) held off the charging Cardinals (14-12, 0-3).

The Cardinals found themselves behind the entire second half but kept clawing back.

Forward Mason Ellis scored a quick bucket inside with 1:01 remaining, cutting the WO-S lead to a mere 53-52. Ellis led the Cardinals with 14 points.

The Mustangs, however, finished the game with a 7-0 spurt.

Green hit a free-throw and then Mustang post Darius Davis followed a Green free-throw miss with a strong bucket in the paint, pushing the margin to 56-52 with 0:40 left.

The Mustangs then sealed it by making 4-of-5 free throws in the final 30 seconds.

“What more can you say about Donte Green,†said Mustang coach Zack Quinn. “He really got us over the hump tonight with his warrior-like play. He plays with so much fire each and every time out.â€

The Mustang defense forced the Cardinals into 28 turnovers.

“Defensively, we turned it up a notch when it counted and we were able to force some turnovers,†said Quinn. “Hats off to the Bridge kids. They fought hard all night. Heck, they forced us into more than 20 turnovers.â€

The Mustangs coughed up the ball 22 times. Marquest Watson pumped in 12 points for the Mustangs. Point guard Darius Rubin tallied eight points while Terrance Noble led the Mustangs with five rebounds.

Tanner Girouard had 10 points and six rebounds for the Cardinals. Nate McAnelly had nine points and seven boards. Justin Reynolds contributed nine points and six rebounds while point guard Tyler Hyde added seven points and six boards.

The Cardinals led 10-5 at the end of the first period thanks to solid defense that forced seven Mustang turnovers.

The Mustangs bounced back with a 25-point second period Green had seven points in the quarter while Watson, Rubin and Justin Francis all had six. Rubin hit an amazing three-point shot just beyond halfcourt to give WO-S a 30-22 cushion at intermission.

The Cardinals whittled the lead to 43-39 to close the third period. Girouard had six points in the quarter while McAnelly, Ellis and Hyde teamed up for three three-pointers.

The Cardinals finished with a 29-28 rebounding edge.

The Cardinals finished 17-of-25 from the free-throw line while the Mustangs went 14-of-25.

The Mustangs host a big one Tuesday when they welcome Hardin-Jefferson (26-4, 3-0) to Mustang Gym. The Cardinals will host Orange County rival Orangefield.

Hey Ill tell you what it was a heck of a game tonight in Cardinal Gym!! BC had control of WO-S all throughout the first half hanging with them in the 3rd quarter too, but West Orange just never missed those free throws, it seemed like they made every one.. Bridge City on the other hand was good from the line, but couldnt hit some key free thros in the 4th and thats what killed us. I liked the intensity the Cardinals showed tonight!..This game could've went either way until 1:01 left in the fourth quarter.. I'd like to see this same effort from here on out and see how we can do   ;)
