CONROE — Tailback Alex Teich and quarterback Joe Simmons ran the Panther offense to near-perfection, combining on the ground for 270 yards on 37 carries as Caney Creek ran to a 21-12 victory over Little Cypress-Mauriceville Thursday night in the regular season opener for both teams at Buddy Moorehead Stadium.

The Panthers outrushed the Bears 272-73 and used precise blocking up front to wear out LC-M's defense.

Junior quarterback President Driver, making his first varsity start, was brilliant for the Bears and completed 10-of-15 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

Junior fullback Taylor Frillou topped the 100-yard mark on a late 19-yard scamper to finish with 101 yards on 19 totes. Senior receiver Josh Thomas entered the 100-yard receiving category with seven receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown. Tailback Kendrex Salter caught two passes for 78 yards and a score.

The Bears (0-1) began early in the game by scoring on their first drive after the opening kickoff. Frillou took 5 carries for 30 yards while hauling in a pass from President Driver for 30 yards as LC-M scored in just nine plays that stretched 65 yards and was capped off by a 38 yard touchdown reception by Thomas. After a fake extra point failed, LC-M's lead stood at 6-0 with 7:06 left in the first quarter.

Caney Creek responded on its first drive by driving 55 yards on 4 plays with Teich and Simmons each taking two carries. The quarterback Simmons ran off left side for the final 26 yards to tie the game at 6-6 and an extra point kick by Jonathan Porras gave the Panthers a 7-6 lead with 6:07 left to play in the first.

CC held the Bears on their next possession to five plays and forced them to punt and taking over at their own 31-yard line.

The Panthers used the remaining 2:44 of the first period and the first 1: 33 of the second quarter to punch it into the end zone and pad their lead on a 34-yard run off right guard by Teich. The Porras kick extended the CC lead to 14-6 with 10:27 left before halftime.

LC-M's next drive fell short at the Panther 15 after an incomplete pass on 4th-and-goal gave CC the ball back. Seven plays later, LC-M cornerback Derrick Bobo secured an interception at the Bear 31. However, LC-M gave the ball right back on the next play when President Driver fired an interception to Tyler Bynum in the open field and the Panthers grabbed the ball with 59 ticks left in the opening half at the LC-M 41.

The Panthers reached the 28-yard line but a desperation pass into the end zone as the half expired was pulled down by LC-M's Brian Harmon as Caney Creek took a 14-6 lead into intermission.

Both teams came back in the second half to score on their first drives. Caney Creek drove 70 yards on 7 plays, and their initial drive was kept alive when a punt was muffed by LC-M's Joseph Viator and the Panthers breathed new life at the Bear 34.

A 20-yard run by Teich off the left side placed the ball at the 14, and three carries later, he reached paydirt. The extra point was good and Caney Creek led 21-6 with 7:54 to play in the third quarter.

LC-M began its first drive of the second half at its own 26, and two key receptions by Thomas (a 17-yarder on 3rd-and-7 and a 9-yard catch on 4th down) kept the drive alive.

On 2nd-and-30 from their own 43, the Bears blew by the Panther secondary when Salter caught a Driver pass and scooted down the right sideline for 57 yards and six points. The two-point conversion failed and the LC-M deficit remained at nine points with Caney Creek holding a 21-12 edge with 3:43 left in the third.

The Bears forced the Panthers three plays and out but were unable to capitalize on their final drive leading up to the fourth quarter, and an 18-yard punt by Frillou gave the Panthers the ball back on their own 36 with 11:01 left to play.

Caney Creek had a chance to put the game away when it had a 1st-and-goal at the LC-M 1, but the stiff Bear defense held the Panthers on the next four plays.

Viator broke up an open field pass to the right on third down, and Simmons misread the play on fourth to give LC-M the ball back at the 7, trailing 21-12 with just over 5 minutes left.

The Bears gained 37 yards on the next five plays, but were unable to convert a 4th-and-7 from their own 44, giving Caney Creek the ball back to run out the clock.

LC-M will renew its long rivalry with West Orange-Stark next Friday in a non-district matchup against the Mustangs at Dan R. Hooks Stadium.
