*****Brooks resigns as football coach in Jasper*****

Recommended Posts

just because someone from the community stands up a a board meeting and says I would like to nominate coach harper does not mean that is what is going on...alvarez aint coming...why would he come there and have someone else be his boss.  they cant pay him enough.  jasper is not the high profile job that some people think it is.  good luck with your search though.

all that matter is we get a good coach

You are correct! alverez is not going to Jasper. A Coach on the Newton staff may be a favorite.

Walkoviak back? He's the only coach I can think of on the Newton staff...He didn't leave Jasper on the best of terms, but had solid teams even though they never could get pass the third or fourth playoff round in 4A. This would be an interesting pick though I wonder how close to retirement he is. I think he'd be a good interim pick. But, if Jasper is looking to build for the future, then I don't believe he is the one.

I have it from multiple sources that Brooks has offered the job to Newton Defensive Coordinator W. T. Johnston....and word is he has accepted it.

Nothing official yet...and of course everything is still pending administration approval. Maybe a month or so before it is official

WT has been with Coach Barbay longer than any other coach on the staff. He has Coached the defense in three State Championship games and won two of those. One in 3A and one in 2A. His youngest son will graduate from Newton this year. WT knows defense inside out and Coach Barbay has let him have total control of the defense for years. His offensive schemes may be different than what Newton runs because he really had limited input on the offensive side of the ball(Coach Barbay's territory). But he has been with Barbay long enough to have gained valuable experience at playing kids where they can help the team the most(one of Barbay's strengths). This means they may not play the position where they are the best, but play where they make the TEAM the best. I think this concept is what has made Coach Barbay so successful over the years. WT should be able to make the transition to head coach with no problems. And yes he is hard nosed and emotional on the side lines. My son played for him and I have no complaints.
