JimBlack Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 I live in the Houston area and had the opportunity to drive out & watch the game last night. I'm friends with the HJ coaches via coaching circles and they had told me this summer how strong Silsbee was going to be and what a good game this would be. So I've had this one on my calendar for quite awhile. I must admit I had a great time last night (fight in the stands non-withstanding! That was handled incredibly well by the way.). I sat down low on the Silsbee side with some HJ people that were great to me. Maybe Lazeek was one of them? Anyway, I loved it--I know you all have talked plenty of mess to each other, but I hope you can both enjoy how much fun that was to have two really well coached teams give their all in that kind of environment. I grew up and played HS ball in Indiana--last night was the closest thing to my small town Indiana roots I've ever seen in Texas HS basketball. Absolute blast. Kids played hard & great. Silsbee is impressively strong, but HJ never gave in. I've heard plenty about Bernard--he's a special player--if he would have shot better than 1 for whatever from outside the lane (I know he could come out next time and go 15-15) then the game would've been very, very interesting--even if he would've hit that open 3 on the break with 2 minutes left--it would've been very interesting! I also loved the game of the point guard from Silsbee. I talked with his grandfather, mom, & family after the game--classy people. He played great--utterly in control & fun to watch--although he and the other great shooter from Silsbee had fairly low release points on their jumpers, which surprised me-but they sure shot it well! Both teams are impressive--if HJ shoots better from outside at all & stays out of fall trouble (their bench isn't as deep as Silsbees') then the game at Silsbee could turn out differently. However, as strong as Silsbee is, that will be quite a challenge. Anyway, just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it, and that I hope you realize (I'm sure you do) how fun and how special last night was regardless of the result. Good times. Thanks.
