Beach, Wagner lead OF past WO-S, 83-53

Gabriel Pruett

The Orange Leader

ORANGEFIELD — The Orangefield Lady Bobcats had a point to prove Friday night and senior Olivia Wagner was in celebration mode.

The Lady Bobcats, who barely got by West Orange Stark 48-39 on Jan. 13, defeated the Lady Mustangs a little more solidly Friday with a 83-53 victory.

January 31 has always been a special day for Wagner, it is her birthday, and she celebrated her 18th birthday Friday with 32 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and five assists.

“It feels awesome to do that on my birthday,†Wagner said after the game.

Wagner was far from alone Friday night as fellow senior Allie Beach had a huge game with 23 points and 13 rebounds while Jessica Weldon was as solid as ever with five rebounds and nine assists from her point guard position.

The Orangefield (21-5, 6-1) win offset two nice games from the Lady Mustangs Demetrius Heard and Breann Cook. Heard led the Lady Mustangs (10-16, 1-6) with 21 points while Cook finished with 11 points. Michelle Simpson added 10 points in the loss.

Yet the night belonged to the Lady Bobcats.

Orangefield got 10 points from Beach in the first period as the Lady Bobcats headed into the second period up 22-13.

Heard did her part in the first period with 11 points.

The Lady Mustangs had a problem with fouls in the first period as Orangefield was in the bonus with 4:00 left before the start of the second period. Orangefield would be in the double-bonus by the end of the first.

Orangefield was not done in the second yet this time it was Wagner who got hot.

Wagner scored 13 points in the second period as the Lady Bobcats outscored the Lady Mustangs 24-13 to take a 46-26 advantage into the break.

The Lady Bobcats slowed down in the third just not by much.

Orangefield won the third period 16-14. Wagner had another 10 points in the frame while Heard and Cook each had five for the Lady Mustangs.

The Lady Bobcats, up 62-40 heading into the fourth, then outscored the Lady Mustangs 22-13 in the game’s final eight minutes.

“We have improved a lot since the start of the second half of district,†Wagner said. “I just hope we are able to keep it going. We wanted to come out to night and prove something and I think we did it.â€

Aimee Scales had seven points, five rebounds and four steals for Orangefield while Morgan Taylor finished with six points. Ashton Wagner added seven points and three boards while Kasidy Hayes put in seven points.
