LITTLE CYPRESS — Nabbing a playoff spot in the District 20-4A basketball race will have to wait a little bit longer for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears.

The Lady Bears, needing a big home win against Nederland Tuesday night at the Bear Cave, came up short at The Bear Cave as the Lady Bulldogs went on a 30-15 tear in the second half.

Post Savannah Desmarais scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds, including 17 points in the second half as the Lady Bulldogs erased an 11-point halftime deficit to claim a 51-47 victory.

LC-M (14-13, 6-6) now finds itself in a tie for the fourth-place spot with Nederland (14-14, 6-6) with two regular season games left.

LC-M goes to third-place Livingston Friday and will host Vidor next Tuesday. Nederland goes to first-place Beaumont Central Friday and will host Livingston Tuesday.

The Lady Bears can clinch a playoff spot if they win two games and Nederland drops one, or if they win one game and Nederland drops two. If both teams are tied at the end of the season, Nederland advances due to their two wins over the Lady Bears in 20-4A play.

Reserve guard Shelly Conn put the Lady Bears up 47-45 with a smooth jumper from just beyond the free-throw line with 1:11 left. However, the Ladsy Bulldogs closed with the game’s last six points.

A Taylor Carlson 10-footer knotted it at 47-47 with 0:50 left. Desmarais worked her magic inside, putting back a lay-in after a fierce rebounds to give the Lady Bulldogs a 49-47 edge with 0:28 left. Alicia Thevis then upped the lead to 51-47 after she put back in a missed free throw by Phoebe Falcon.

Turnover hampered the Lady Bears all night as they committed 26, nine of them coming in the crucial fourth period.

Katie Harrell had a superb all-around game for the Lady Bears, notching 14 points and nine rebounds. Ellen Williams added 11 points. The two combined for 21 first-half points but had just four after intermission, all coming from Harrell.

Desmarais took charge in the third quarter, especially after the Lady Bears were saddled with foul trouble. She cut loose for 13 points in the period, most of them coming on slashing drives in the paint.

The Lady Bears led 31-20 at intermission but slowly saw the Lady Bulldogs chip away behind Desmarais.

LC-M finished with a 28-24 rebounding edge. Tiffani Thompson yanked down five boards for LC-M while Williams, Shelby Apperson and Hailey Christian added four apiece.

Thevis, who had eight points, also added nine boards for Nederland, which committed 18 turnovers. Carlson finished with eight points and four rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs went just 9-of-18 from the free-throw line while the Lady Bears were 7-of-11.

The Lady Bears went on a 18-10 second-quarter surge to take the nice lead at the half. Williams scored eight points in the period, including two three-pointers while Harrell tossed in six points.

Tied up for 4th right?

Yep tied up for 4th now. Very intense game last night and Nederland did an awesome job in the second half. The Lady Bears just completely lost their composure in the second half. Nederlands second half was just a little better than LCM's 1st half . Time to regroup and finish of the District season strong.
