LamarStatesports Posted February 5, 2009 Report Posted February 5, 2009 The visiting Temple College Leopards softball team extended their 2009 record to 6-0 Thursday, when they swept a doubleheader at Lamar State College-Port Arthur, 2-0 and 9-1, in the Seahawks’ opening day of action in the 2009 season. Former Nederland High School pitcher Caitlin Austin went the distance and got the win in the first game. Lamar State sophomore Alison Heidbreder pitched a complete game for the Seahawks. The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first four innings of the second game before the Leopards’ offense started to break through with five runs. Former Nederland High School pitcher Shauna Kelly opened the second game for Lamar State and lasted four and a half innings before giving way to Heidbredder, who was relieved in the sixth by freshman leftie Nikki Morace. Lamar State’s biggest loss on opening day was centerfielder Hannah Godina, who went down with an ankle injury in the fifth inning of the second game and was taken to the hospital for x-rays. No information about her status was available by press time. Lamar State’s next action will be February 13-14, at the Cowtown Classic Softball Tournament in Fort Worth. The Seahawks will play two teams from Kansas on the first day of the tournament, facing Ft. Scott Community College at 10:45 a.m. and Independence Community College at 4 p.m. Pairings for the second day will be set after Friday’s action. The Seahawks’ next home date is Monday, February 23, when they will host a doubleheader against Louisiana State University-Eunice.
