Guest JoesBros Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 Three-time major champion Ernie Els has committed to play in the Shell Houston Open. Els, a 39-year-old native of South Africa, has been a fixture as an elite player since his breakout victory at the 1994 U.S. Open at Oakmont. He has finished the past 15 seasons ranked among the top 10 in the world — the longest active streak of any player. The next-longest streak belongs to Tiger Woods, who has been in the top 10 at the end of every season since 1997. The latest of Els’ 60 victories around the world came last March at the Honda Classic. Els came back from a three-stroke deficit in the final round, ending a PGA Tour victory drought of three years, four months and 29 days. He committed to play in last year’s SHO, only to withdraw the Sunday before the tournament because of an illness. SHO tournament director Steve Timms has early commitments from former world No. 1 Greg Norman, plus four players ranked among the top 25 in the current rankings: England’s Lee Westwood (12), Els (13), Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy (15) and Spain’s Alvaro Quiros (25). Seven other top-25 players appeared in last year’s SHO but have yet to make official commitments to the April 2-5 event at the Redstone Golf Club Tournament Course: Padraig Harrington (3), Phil Mickelson (5), Geoff Ogilvy (6), Anthony Kim (11), Adam Scott (17), Steve Stricker (18) and The Woodlands resident K.J. Choi (20). “We are extremely pleased that Ernie has made such an early commitment to this year’s event,†Timms said. [email protected]
