BARBERS HILL BASEBALL 2009 GAME RESULTS

BH 14   BAY CITY 9

A very solid start to the season. BH ended up winning the game 14 - 9. BH's top 3 pitchers, Peterson, Burditt, Rocha, (in no particular order) all looked good giving up 3 earned runs in 6 innings, each of them pitching 2 innings. Blaine McDonald, and Cole Young both pitched well in relief in their 2 innings of work. The hitting and fielding were both highlights of the game. The defense turned in 3 double plays with Carmona and Clifton up the middle looking very sharp. Colby Henscey had a diving catch on a ball in the left center gap. Jake Ponder had a very solid game behind the plate with no passed balls, several very good blocks on pitches in the dirt, and throwing a couple of runners out at 2nd on steal attempts. Matt Peterson and Alex Rocha both had solid games at 1st base with several good digs.

At the plate Colby Henscey led the way going 3-4 with 3 HR in consecutive at bats (2-run, 3-run, and solo shot) and 7 RBI, all 3 homeruns were to the opposite field on outside pitches, 2 to straight away right field and 1 to the right center power alley. Tyler Lyday also hit a crushing 2-run HR to straight away center and Matt Peterson hit a HR to the right center power alley on an outside pitch. BH had several kids with at least 2 hits on the night. Correct me if I forget someone, Henscey, Lyday, Ponder, Carmona, Peterson. BH had at least 17 hits on the night. BH plays again Friday evening at home against Bridge City.

I was there it looked like a team in midseason form. What a hitting show lead by and staring Henscey the defense not to shabby Clifton and Camona could be the best middle infield in the area. Pitching was solid from the 09 Trio (Pete,Roach,JBird) they gave up 3 runs in 6 innings. It will be a real test againist BC on Friday. They are ranked in  the top 10

Must agree with RIP09 Ponder looked like human backstop

Barbers Hill vs. Manvel Scrimmage- Played Monday night in Manvel instead of Tuesday at home.

Another good outing for BH. The pitching of Burditt, Rocha, & Peterson was solid once again. Each of them pitched 2 innings giving up a combined 3 hits and 1 run. Carmona also looked good in 2 inning of work, pitching 2 scoreless innings himself. BH lead 8 - 1 after 6 innings before putting in all subs into the batting order for 4 straight innings and our 4th and 5th pitchers of the night struggled with control. They just didn't have a good night, walking 6 - 8 batters and giving up 7 - 8 hits and allowing 10 runs in 2 1/3 innings of work.

The defense once again was very solid with only 1 error on the night. Jake Ponder had another solid game behind the plate blocking and threw out another runner on a steal attempt to 2nd. Colby Henscey had another diving catch in left field and the middle infield combo of Tony Carmona and Cody Clifton was very solid making several plays and once again turning a double play. Rocha and Peterson both played well at 1st Base again.

Although not hitting quite as well as the first game BH still put 10 runs on the board with 10 hits. Matt Peterson had another homerun with a 3-Run shot in the first inning, Henscey was 1 for 2 with 3 RBIs, Rocha had an RBI hit, Burditt had 2 hits, Ponder had 2 hits and a couple RBIs. BH put up 6 runs in the 1st inning.

Feel free to correct me if I left anything out.

It should be a tough game on Monday aganst Bay City but if the the defense stays solid and the hitting keeps hot then BH should get the opener. Top to bottom I cannot find any weakness. Very solid performance on D and O. We had a lot of big hits with runners in scoring position

BH 6  Bay City 5

A good ball game although BH was a little shaky in the field. 4 errors on the night led to 3 of the 5 Bay City runs. Burditt got the start going 3 innings giving up 3 runs in the first inning before giving way to Matt Peterson. Peterson finished the game getting the win going 4 innings and giving up 2 runs. Great job of pitching by Peterson in relief. Heath Padgett had a nice diving catch in center and Carmona and Clifton had a rally ending double play early in the game.

The offensive stars of the night were Padgett, Ponder, and Burditt. Burditt had a couple of hits on the night with a big 2 run single in the bottom of the first cutting the Bay City lead to 3-2. The game stayed that way until the bottom of the 5th. Tony Carmona reached on an error and Ponder gave BH a 4-3 lead with a 2-run 400ft bomb over the scoreboard in left. Peterson shut Bay City down in order in the top of the 6th on 5 pitches. Jared Baker hit a 1-out double off the bottom of the left-center wall in the bottom of the 6th and Heath Padgett gave BH a cushion with a 2-Run HR to left for a 6-3 lead. Peterson got the leadoff hitter in the top of the 7th and then made his only 2 mistakes of the night. With a 1-2 count, Peterson hit the batter and then gave up a 2-run homerun to cut the lead to 6-5. Peterson got the next hitter to line to center and then closed the game out with a dribbler down the 1st base line that Ponder scooped up and threw to first.

Burditt 2 hits, Padgett 2 hits 2-run HR, Ponder 2-run HR, Baker 2 hits

I like what I'm seeing so far. It seems we have a different player stepping up with the big hits every game.

1st Scrimmage - Henscey

2nd Scrimmage- Peterson

3rd Scrimmage - Burditt

1st Game - Burditt, Ponder, Padgett, Baker

What's really going to be exciting is when everyone is on and if Bay City is any indication has what they can do as a team it could get very interesting.

Columbus Tournament

BH 10    Caldwell 0

Rocha gets the win - 5 ip, 1 hit, 3 K, 0 runs

Baker  - 1 ip, 0 hits, 1 K, 0 runs

Carmona 4-4, 4 runs, 2 rbi

Padgett   1-3, 2 runs

Henscey   1-3, 2 runs, 1 rbi

Ponder    1-3, 3 r-HR,1 run, 4 rbi

Rocha      1-2 , 1rbi

Rocha looked very sharp on the mound and the defense was very solid behind him. The DP combo of Carmona and Clifton once again turning a double play in the game.

BH 11    LaGrange 0

Burditt gets the win. 5 ip, 3 hits, 8 K, 0 BB

Daniel Mitchell - 2 ip, 1 hit

Carmona 2-4, 2 runs

Henscey 2-5, 3 run HR, 4 rbi, 1 run

Ponder 2-5, 1 run, HR, 1 rbi

Burditt 2-3, 1 run

Rocha 1-3, 1 run, HR, 2 rbi

Peterson 1-2, 2b

Lyday 3-4, 2b, 2 runs, 2 rbi

Baker 2-4, 2b, 1 rbi

This was a great day of baseball for BH. Great pitching, fielding, and hitting. The games were played all day with a 15 - 25 mph wind blowing straight in from left-center field. BH hit 4 HR on the day into this wind and as unbelievable as it may sound, they easily could have had a 7-9 HR day without the wind blowing. Henscey and Ponder both hit 2 shots to the wall in the first game that the wind held up and Lyday and Baker both hit shots to the wall in the second game. The pitching was outstanding giving up only 5 hits in the 2 games and getting 2 shutouts. The middle infield of Carmona and Clifton turned 2 more double plays on the day as well. Ponder was very solid behind the plate in both games allowing no passed balls and throwing out both runners that attempted to steal 2nd. Baker made several nice plays at 3rd base and Lyday was solid at 1st base. The outfield of Henscey, Padgett, Rocha, and Burditt were error free with several fly balls into the blustery winds.

COLUMBUS TOURNAMENT

BH 11   COLUMBUS 12

As good as BH has looked this year and in the first 2 games of this tournament, I watched an entirely different team on Saturday night. It just seemed to be one of those nights that nothing went right. For whatever reason, this team was not ready to play last night. A very poor defensive night for BH and only a few kids hit the ball and looked good at the plate. Every team will lose games they're expected to win and maybe win a few they're expected to lose. Tonight we definitely lost one to a much less talented team. I know the kids got ripped by the coaches for about 15 to 20 minutes after the game so hopefully they'll respond in a positive way and let this one go. Looking forward to a rebound on Tuesday night!

Game results:

BH Offense : 11 runs, 7 hits, 8 runners lob

Padgett - 3-3, 2b, 3b, 2 bb, 1 rbi, 4 runs, 2 sb

Henscey- 2-2, 2b, 2 bb, 1 hbp, 2 rbi, 1 run, 1 sb

Burditt  - 1-4, HR, 1 run, 3 rbi

BH Defense: 12 runs allowed only 5 earned, 9 hits, 6 walks, 7 K, 6 errors

Peterson - 3 ip, 3 hits, 5 runs 4 earned, 4 bb, 4 k

Mitchell   - 2 ip, 4 hits, 6 runs 1 earned, 2 bb, 2 k

Baker      - 1 ip, 2 hits, 1 run 0 earned, 1 k

All-Tournament Team selections from BH were:

Padgett - 5 for 11, 7 runs, 1 rbi, 4 sb, 3 bb, 0 errors

Carmona - 6 for 12, 6 runs, 3 rbi, 3 sb, 2 bb, 4 errors

Rocha    - 3 for 8, 1 run, 3 rbi, 0 sb, 2 bb, 1 solo HR, 0 errors, 5 ip, 1 hit, 3 k, 0 bb

Other notables that had a good tournament:

Henscey - 5 for 10, 4 runs, 7 rbi, 2 sb, 2 bb, 1 hbp, 3-run HR, 0 errors

Burditt   - 3 for 9, 2 runs, 3 rbi, 0 sb, 2 bb, 3-run HR, 1 error, 5 ip, 3 hits, 8 k, 0 bb

Ponder   - 3 for 12, 2 runs, 6 rbi, 1 bb, solo HR, 3-run HR, 1 error

the reason for this whole thing was extreme overconfidence before the game not only towards the weakness of the Columbus team but also the fact that the wind was blowing out the whole night therefore making BH hitters think of only one thing... home run, not to mention a few mental and physical errors committed. But this is not the same team as last year and one dissapointing loss is not goin to break this team up... as ive said before this team is what every high school team should be, a group of great friends playing baseball together, so all you nay sayers stick around because BH has a lot of ball yet to be played
