Thats good times overall for the wind conditions today and first meet.ย BH Boys took first in the distance medley (BH only brought their distance runners).ย BH's top miler (Ramsey) ran a 4:49 split for the 1600, but did not run the 1600 race today. KFDM COOP
NEDERLAND รขโฌโ Paris Collins and her potential may be catching up to each other before long. The 18-year-old Port Arthur Memorial senior has aspired to greatness in the hurdles ever since when she watched Jamaal Charles master the event for the Titans. Thatรขโฌโขs about the time when LeRoy Leopold and Ora Smith retired and Port Arthur adapted to a rebuilding mode in track and field. The PAISD had to be patient while a new quarter-million dollar synthetic track surface finally opened last April. When the 45th Nederland Bulldog Relays unveiled the area season under ideal weather conditions Friday, Collins served notice that 2009 had to be her yearรขโฌยฆ. Guess what? It just might be, too. Call Paris a work in progress. Call Memorialรขโฌโขs boys and girls a work in progress as well. Yet thereรขโฌโขs ample reason for an optimistic track outlook in Port Arthur againรขโฌยฆ after a lean stretch of recent years. Itรขโฌโขs a bit different progression in Port Arthur, Mid-County and Beaumont than it is for Vidor pole vaulter Jared Parker. Clearing 15-9 last May to win the 4A boys gold medal at the 97th UIL state track and field championships, Parker made a most auspicious debut in Friday afternoon's sunlight by clearing 15-6 and winning the competition by a full four feet. Parker climbs a much different mountain than most area tracksters, but he wants to excel the same way that Paris Collins does. And Paris wants it bad. Collins swept to gold medals in the hurdles, covering the 100-meter hurdles in 16.99 and the 300-meter hurdles in 49.22. She did not get pushed that strongly in her heats, yet she dipped under 17 seconds in the sprint race and under 50 in the longer event. Thereรขโฌโขs no doubt that the new all-weather surface has helped Paris to be closer to tip-top shape in mid-February. รขโฌลItรขโฌโขs made a positive change, thatรขโฌโขs for sure,รขโฌ Collins said. รขโฌลWe can practice longer, and get our warm-ups in better. Now that Iรขโฌโขm a senior, I have to work harder to get my scholarshipรขโฌยฆ I have to work harder to reach my goals. I have to be more serious about everything I do.รขโฌ Itรขโฌโขs great to see Port Arthur nudging its way back onto the area map. That dedication looked obvious when Paris emerged strong out of her blocks in the 300-meter hurdles. She said she had pushed herself harder, yet this young lady has more progress that she can make in the next 10 weeks. Namely, Paris has an excellent change to get physically stronger in the coming weeks. รขโฌลIรขโฌโขm about the same when it comes to strength,รขโฌ she said. รขโฌลBut Iรขโฌโขm working harder. I know that I can be way better than I am now.รขโฌ Memorial coach Sandra Bradford has coached some good ones, too. She has noticed a more dedicated version of Paris Collins. รขโฌลThis is her year,รขโฌ Bradford said. รขโฌลItรขโฌโขs now or never.รขโฌ Bradfordรขโฌโขs team won eight events against a good caliber Nederland field. The best of the Golden Triangle arrived, plus the addition of Barbers Hill and Pasadena South Houston toughened the challenge. While Vidorรขโฌโขs pole vaulter owned the head of the class, several other excellent area numbers filled the boys division. Some of last yearรขโฌโขs premier area performers showed signs of being ready. They included Deweyvilleรขโฌโขs Joe Dooley in the 800 and 1,600, Ozenรขโฌโขs Jarrade Lee in the shot and discus, and a PA quarter-miler Michael Johnson opened the season with a first-place time of 51.06. Most of the area schools will run next Friday at Little Cypress-Mauriceville. Port Arthur Memorial will travel to Humble and compete in the Zoe Simpson Invitational next Saturday at Kingwood. cardinalcc
I wouldn't call yesterday ideal weather conditions. The wind was blowing very hard against the homestretch. I think we could have seen a lot faster times had the wind not been a factor. Also, if that was a 10.7 into that wind, that is very impressive. bronco1
FYI The young man who won the Long Jump in the Nederland meet was Jakari Delasbour, a freshman. He also won his heat in the 200m.

Baller3
The article focuses on a 5A senior girl running the 100m hurdles in 16.99 and the 300 hurdles in 49 seconds.ย I know its early in the season but those times are not impressive! bmtdc1996
I agree, if this is going to be "her year" she better pick up the pace pretty quick.ย 16.9 and 49 won't go anywhere, including 1A
