**2006 SETXsports Week 1 Top Ten**

Recommended Posts

Week 0 brought us some very entertaining games across the area. Friday saw two games that pitted teams from the preseason top ten against each other as preseason #1 West Brook defeated preseason # 6 Ozen and preseason #2 WO-S defeated preseason #7 Dayton. There wasn’t much shakeup for the #1-#5 spots, but the bottom half saw some changes for Week 1. A few teams have switched places and some new faces have emerged as preseason contenders.

1. West Brook- The Bruins started off the 2006 season with a big win over Ozen 35-14 Friday night at Lamar Cardinal Stadium. The Bruin offense was led by sophomore tailback Christan Michael who rushed for 134 of the Bruins 250 yards and two touchdowns in his varsity debut. Joe Chaisson also added three touchdowns, two on the ground and one in the air. West Brook now heads into game two of the Beaumont Bowl series this week when they take on Central at Lamar Friday night.

2. West Orange-Stark- The Mustangs found themselves in a war Friday night in Dayton as both teams showcased their defenses in the first half and took a 6-6 tie into halftime. The Stangs came out firing in the second half and would eventually pull away late to defeat the Broncos 26-9 to begin the year 1-0. The WO-S defense was able to keep all-star running back Michael Dugat in check, holding him to just 70 yards. The Mustang offense was led by quarterback Andre Bevil as he passed for 170 yards and 2 touchdowns. DePauldrick Garrett added 94 yards and Earl Thomas added 68 yards on the ground. The Mustangs will renew their rivalry with LC-M Friday when the “Orange Bowl†will be played at Dan R. Hooks Stadium.

3. Central- The Jaguar’s offense was definitely clicking Friday night at Stallworth Stadium in Baytown as Central took down 5A Baytown Lee 21-9. The Jaguar offense pumped out 413 yards of total offense while the defense held Lee to just 141 yards. Quarterback Brandon Williams was 7-13 for 211 yards and 1 touchdown through the air and also rushed for 105 yards on 9 carries. Receiver Michael Henry hauled in 3 catches for 81 yards in the contest. The Jaguars will now take on West Brook at Lamar Friday night.

4. Port Arthur Memorial- Memorial had a bye in week 0 and will open up their season Friday night when they host the Ozen Panthers at Memorial Stadium.

5. Nederland- The Bulldogs hung tough with the #8 4A team in the state Friday night at Reliant Stadium, but in the end La Marque would be too much, racking up 362 yards of offense and taking a 28-20 victory over Nederland. A surprising stat is that Nederland only managed 4 first downs the entire game but still only lost by 8. Tailback Micah Mosley led the Bulldog offense with 136 yards on the ground and 2 touchdowns of 68 and 57 yards. The Bulldogs will have their home opener this week when they host Houston Forest Brook at Bulldog Stadium.

6. Dayton- The Broncos were “welcomed†to Southeast Texas football Friday night. However, it wasn’t the welcome they were hoping for as they fell in the season opener 26-9 to WO-S. They played the Mustangs tough for one half as they took a 6-6 tie into halftime. But the Stangs would come out firing in the second half and pull away late for the win. Dayton all-star running back Michael Dugat was kept in check by the “Chain Gang†defense of WO-S as he managed just 70 yards on the ground. Quarterback Andrew Thomas had the bulk of the rushing yards as he rushed for 108 yards in the contest. Dayton will be at home again this week as they welcome the Nacogdoches Dragons to Bronco Stadium.

7. Ozen- Even with the great performance of quarterback London Durham the Panthers couldn’t overcome the 5A West Brook Bruins as they fell 35-14 in the season opener Friday night at Lamar’s Cardinal Stadium. Durham was 16-33 for 212 yards and 2 touchdowns in Friday’s loss to the Bruins. Unfortunately, two touchdowns would not be enough as the Panther defense gave up 316 yards and 35 points. The Panther defense will once again be heavily tested this week as they travel to Memorial Stadium in Port Arthur to face the Titans.

8. Barbers Hill- Even though the Eagles struggled in their two scrimmages, they proved Saturday night that they can get the job done when it counts. Barbers Hill opened up the 2006 season with a solid 23-6 victory over the Wharton Tigers at Pearland. It was the “Patton Show†as the duo of brothers accounted for 192 of the total rushing yardage and both had a part in 20 of the 23 points. The defense was also solid, holding Wharton scoreless until the 4th quarter. Linebacker Joe Sexton helped by nabbing an interception from Tiger quarterback Joe Ansley. Barbers Hill will travel to the “Bone Yard†in Jasper Friday to face the Bulldogs.

9. Newton- Newton had a bye in week 0 and will open up their season Friday night when they host the 3A Crockett Bulldogs at Singletary Stadium.

10. Kirbyville- The Wildcats may have been the biggest surprise of week 0. They stormed out of the gate and completely demolished the Cleveland Indians by a tune of 51-12. It only took 1:37 for the Wildcats to get in the endzone as LeKarlis Diggles would take it in from 42 yards out. That set the tone for the rest of the game as Kirbyville racked up 417 yards of offense, 397 of which was on the ground. Pierce Rhodes was the offensive leader for the Wildcats, totaling 121 yards on just 6 carries and 3 touchdowns. The Kirbyville defense was stingy, giving up just 133 total yards in the game. Kirbyville will have their first road game of the year this week when they travel to Carthage to face the Bulldogs.

Dropping out: Jasper (lost to Livingston 27-14)

Nederland #5?? thats about right. Sure the score was close vs LaMarque but 4 1st downs the entire game. Where is Silsbee? I know it was a scrimmage but they handled Nederland and they arent even in the top 10?? The Dogs are a Mosley injury away from having an unNederland type season......just my opinion
