Dogs hold off Pirates

PREP BASKETBALL

The Port Arthur News

NEDERLAND – A motivated and scrappy Vidor club tried as hard as it could to spoil Nederland's senior night, but the Bulldogs outscored the Pirates 10-5 in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to claim a 55-50 victory on Friday in the Dog Dome.

Twice the Bulldogs tried to deliver knockout blows to Vidor but the relentless Pirates continued to plug away, recovering from two, eight point deficits in the second half and actually tied the game at 45 midway through the fourth.

In the end, there was just too much of Nederland's Dionte Forney, Josh Dean and Chris Hammond, as Forney had 16 points and 15 rebounds, Dean had 14 and Hammond had 11.

Also for Nederland, which improved to 21-11 overall and 9-4 in District 20-4A, Francis Torres had nine points.

The Dogs hit eight 3-pointers for the game but went 10-for-20 at the line, which allowed the Pirates to keep things close.

For Vidor, which fell to 2-11 in league play, Jared Williamson had 14 points and brother Jacob had 13.

After Friday's results, in which Livingston beat Central, Nederland and Livingston are tied for second place at 9-4 while Central fell to 8-5. Each team has one district game remaining.

Nederland will travel to 1-12 Lumberton, Livingston will travel to Vidor and Central will host PN-G. All three teams have clinched playoff spots along with Ozen, who won the district with a 12-1 record.

In the event of a tie for either second or third place, the tied teams will decide to play an extra game or flip a coin to determine which team is seeded where.
