Season ends at Regionals for OC swimmers

Tommy Mann, Jr.

The Orange Leader

MAGNOLIA, Texas — After many grueling months of hard work, the season has finally come to an end for nine area swimmers.

The beautiful and spacious natatorium at Magnolia High School, north of Houston and near The Woodlands, was the setting for the Region V, Class 4-A swim meet this past Friday and Saturday. It was the second consecutive year the school was hosting the event inside its now five year old facility.

Swimmers representing three Orange County high schools have trained hours and hours to reach this point, and they all made respectable showings. Unfortunately, before the preliminary rounds began on Friday, swimmers Will Cowart, West Orange-Stark High School, Hannah McLendon, Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School, and Jessica Cameron, Vidor High School, pulled out of the weekend’s contest due to illness.

To qualify for Saturday’s final round, swimmers had to be one of the top eight qualifiers to advance to Saturday’s finals. Only 16 swimmers from each event — a winner from each of the eight regions and the next eight fastest qualifiers — are allowed to advance to the State meet in Austin.

Leading the way for the six swimmers who did attend Friday was Alex Dorman of Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School.

Dorman, a sophomore, placed 10th in the Boys 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 2:07.45, which is an improvement of 2.1 seconds over his time at the district meet earlier this month.

Dorman also finished 11th in the Boys 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 5:52.71, which is an improvement of nearly three seconds from the district meet, and also just happens to be a new LC-M High School record.

Fellow swimmer and sophomore Cassey Brown led the girls swim team as she finished 13th in the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 2:25.52. Brown placed 12th in the Girls 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 6:28.39.

Chasity Chapman, a freshman on the LC-M swim team, faced some stiff competition in the Girls 50 Yard Freestyle as she placed 22nd with a time of 41.78 seconds. She also finished 22nd in the Girls 100 Freestyle with a time of 1:40.97.

Leading the Vidor High School swim team was sophomore Jarrett Cameron. He finished 18th in the Boys 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 2:18.78, and his 14th place finish in the Boys 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 6:25.60 was an 11.47 second improvement over his time at district.

Ashley Mann, a junior on the Vidor swim team and making her third appearance at the regional swim meet, finished 17th with a time of 1:13.84 in the Girls 100 Yard Freestyle. She also placed 18th in the Girls 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:25.30, which was a .23 second improvement over her personal best time for the event.

Tim Brown is a sophomore at Vidor, and was making his second trip to the regional swim meet.

Brown placed 19th in the Boys 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:22.08. He also finished 23rd in the Boys 100 Yard Freestyle at 1:11.57.
