Longtime baseball coach Chris Rupp notched win #600 with a 11-1 Goose Creek Memorial win over Baytown Christian Academy. Soph. Price Jacobs tosses a complete game 6 inning run-rule victory for the Patriots who improve to 8-4-1 on the season. Jacobs allowed a lone single in the top of the 1st inning to go with 2 walks and 4 K's for the game. The Bulldogs could only muster one other baserunner after the 1st. The Goose was lead defensively by Fresh. Chance Czerwonka and Jr. Mason Ball.

Jacobs and Ball once again set the table for the Patriot batters. Jacobs went 3 for 4 with a walk and Ball drew 3 walks. The middle of the order was led by Brandon Rhoden, Dalton Going, Cody Butler, and Jacob Wilburn.

The Patriots will be in action again on Thursday as they host the inaugural Goose Creek Memorial Tournament.

Price Jacobs started a little slow, but he sure finished well, helping lift Goose Creek Memorial to an 11-1 victory Tuesday over Baytown Christian Academy. The coaching victory was the 600th in the career of Patriots coach Chris Rupp.

In the bottom of the first inning, Jacobs drew a leadoff walk, stole second base and scored along with Mason Ball and Brandon Rhoden to give GCM a 3-1 lead. Thanks to Jacobs’ pitching performance, that was all the offense the Patriots would need.

The sophomore right-hander walked a pair of batters and allowed a hit in the top of the first inning as BCA took a 1-0 lead. He quickly settled in, though, and pitched a one-hit, six-inning complete game, walking three and striking out four. He retired the final 10 batters he faced and 14 of the last 15.

“He did a tremendous job on the hill,†Rupp said. “Our offense scored runs again, and we played solid defense, finally.â€

The game ended in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jacobs drilled a ball to the base of the left-center field wall, just below the 370-foot sign. The hit, his third of the game, brought home Alex Gonzalez to give the Patriots a 10-run-rule victory.

That started a celebration, where Rupp received an autographed baseball, as well as an ice-water dousing, from the team.

“It’s something I never would have done,†Rupp said, “without being blessed with all the great, talented players I’ve had over the years. They win the games, not the coaches.

Lots of those players contributed Tuesday. Rhoden was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, Ball was 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs, and Dalton Going was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Jacob Wilburn was 1-for-2 with a walk, a run and two RBIs.

“Hopefully,†Rupp said, “we can put a lot more of these wins together this year and make a run at the playoffs.â€

The Patriots return to action Thursday in their own inaugural Goose Creek Memorial Tournament. Games will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 10 a.m., and 1, 4 and 7 p.m. GCM faces Huffman at 7 p.m. Thursday.

What happened to him and San Jac??? Whatever, it was a good move for SJ...WW

I would venture to guess that he is no longer there. We are more than happy to have him at GCM!

Maybe he got a better job? Am I missing something here? I'll plead ignorance on this one.

from San Jacinto College North's archives:

Rupp Named Head Assistant at Rice University

Chris Rupp

Chris Rupp, the head coach at San Jacinto College North, has joined the baseball staff at Rice University as an assistant coach, head coach Wayne Graham announced Thursday.

Rupp, who succeeded Graham as coach of the Gators in 1992, led the Gators to the JUCO World Series the last four seasons.

"I appreciate the opportunity to move up to the Division I level, especially at a top program at Rice," said Rupp. "It's a huge honor and I'm very excited."

The opportunity to coach at Rice was impossible for Rupp to turn down. "My biggest problem was the timing," Rupp said. "But sometimes things happen that you can't control." Rupp said he is leaving behind a great team with an opportunity to win a national championship.

San Jacinto Athletic Director Gene Moore also expressed concern about how the young players Rupp is leaving behind would cope with the sudden change in coaching.

"I hope they will stay positive," he said. "I know they will do everything they can to get back to the Junior College World Series."

The 43-year-old Rupp previously coached under Graham at San Jac during the 1991 season, then moved to the top spot in 1992 when Graham came to Rice. He had a 346-170 record at San Jac.

Among Rupp's coaching honors are two Region XIV south coach of the year awards, four ABCA regional coach of the year honors, and four Texas-New Mexico JCBCA coach of the year awards. Last summer, he also coached the Texas-New Mexico JCBCA all-stars and served as an assistant coach on the NJCAA all-star squad which toured Japan.
