PoppaBearstarr Posted March 11, 2009 Report Posted March 11, 2009 here is a little info on the article... Championship coach Hardin-Jefferson is where Breithaupt became a well-known figure statewide as coach of the 1991 state championship boys basketball team and the Hawks’ record-setting 1991-92 squad. That group averaged 109.4 points per game (a state record and third nationally) and had 27 100-point games (second all-time nationally) en route to a second straight state tournament berth. It was the highlight of Breithaupt’s coaching career, one he figured would last much longer. “I never thought of doing anything else but coaching and working with young people,†Breithaupt said. “I enjoyed being called coach.†Several of Breithaupt’s assistants went on to be head coaches, including Todd Sutherland, who is currently the head coach at Hardin-Jefferson and is taking the Hawks to another state tournament appearance this week. Carey Palmer, the head boys basketball coach at Morton Ranch and another former Hardin-Jefferson assistant under Breithaupt, said the way the ’91 title team played signified the character of the players and coaches involved with it. “We learned a lot, and the players learned a lot,†Palmer said. “Just about everyone on that team went on to do something successful because we were a team and we worked as a team. Everyone had great character .†Palmer said the qualities Breithaupt showed as a coach made it clear he would be successful in any endeavor. “Charles was a very driven person, just like any coach,†Palmer said. “He’s goal-oriented, and he had high expectations, not only for himself but those he worked with.†Farney approached Breithaupt about joining the UIL after the Hawks’ 1991 state championship season. A year later, Breithaupt did. “He convinced me that if I could make an impact on a small group of people, I could do it for a larger group,†Breithaupt said. “I didn’t have any dreams or aspirations of being executive director until I got here.†Now I know why they still hold the scoring records in Texas...wow, that is awesome and will probably stand for a long time. ;D
