Where's Gary Laney? I thought the Enterprise had the best FCS writer in the country as their new LU beat writer and sports editor? If Laney is not around, Lee Yobbi needs to give him a call and learn!

He also wanted start-ups Georgia State and South Alabama and landed both. LU will compete as a Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division II) independent for 2010. It is scheduled to join the Southland in 2011.

Is LU a Div II program? I am sure UNLV and Dick Vitale feel that way, but come on Lee Yobbi! FCS is formerly I-AA.

Gary didn't really write any great articles about basketball, and I don't remember too many about football that were outstanding.

I think Rush Wood is the best writer for Lamar sports with Chris Dabe being the second best.

Laney is an expert on FCS football. His coverage of McNeese and FCS while in Lake Charles, got him a reputation around the nation. It'd be hard to argue that he was not one of the top FCS writers nationally, even arguably better than the Sports Network's writer. There's no other writer in the SLC footprint that knew as much about FCS as he did, outside of perhaps CSN's beat writer.

Another Lamar tidbit with incorrect information...

The Houston couple also donated $1 million to help Lamar reinstate its football program. The university recently announced that 25 student-athletes have signed a national letter of intent to play football this fall. Lamar will play a full exhibition schedule in 2010 and begin Southland Conference play in 2011.
