Pirates ambush Hardin, 11-1

DEWEYVILLE — Doing most of their damage in the fourth and fifth innings, the Deweyville Pirates blasted past the Hardin Hornets 11-1 in five innings in District 23-2A play at Pirate Field Friday night.

The Pirates (10-5, 4-2) pounded out nine hits and took advantage seven Hardin (1-5 in district) errors along with five walks to notch the decisive win as they finished the first half of 23-2A play strong.

Eric Avila earned the win on the hill for the Pirates. He scattered just four hits in five innings of work while striking out four and walking five.

The Pirates grabbed a run in the bottom of the first.

Keeton Addison, who was 2-for-4, singled to center and swiped second. Ronnie Anglin drew a walk and the two Pirates pulled off a double steal as Addison eventually darted home on a bad throw from the catcher to third base.

Deweyville added a run in the second.

Kane Kachtik, who was 2-for-2, had an infield single and swiped second. He went to third on a Michael Williams’ fielder's choice and scored off a Brady Williams RBI groundout to second.

The Pirates made it 3-0 in the third.

Seth Williams roped a one-out triple to left-centerfield and scored on off a Garrett Haney sacrifice fly to center.

Hardin scratched in a run in the top of the fourth.

Logan McDaniel had a one-out single to right and Nick Fregia followed with a double that bounced off the leftfield wall. After Carson Koen walked to load the bases, Fregia came home after a bases-loaded walk issued by Avila. Avila got out of the jam though by fanning Mitch Villemez for the third out.

The Pirates tacked on three runs in the fourth.

Michael Williams had a leadoff single and went to second on a wild pitch by Hardin starter Myles Taylor. After Brady Williams moved Michael Williams to third on a groundout, Addison belted a double to leftfield to bring in a run..

With two outs, Seth Williams drew a walk and Haney slapped a two-run double to leftfield.

The Pirates added five runs in the fifth off just one hit.

Kachtik drew a leadoff walk. Avila had an infield single and Michael Williams walked to load the bases.

Kachtik was able to score on a bases-loaded walk to Brady Williams, making it 7-1. Garrett Cathriner then replaced Taylor on the Hornets’ hill but things didn’t get better.

With one out, Avila scored on a wild pitch and Michael Williams would score on a dropped ball in rightfield hit by Ronnie Anglin. Seth Williams ended it by beating out a throw after a slapper that was overthrown at first base as the last two runs raced in to end the contest.
