adminbaberuth Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 Westbrook's No 1. Central played them well, better than Ozen. WOS has run the table on Dayton and LCM. Memorial went to sleep the 2nd half but hung on against Ozen. I like WOS at no.2 , can they beat Central and Memorial ?
KFDM COOP Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 I like your picks ADMIN. WOS has the talent and speed to be # 2. Our rankings should be out this evening.
#1stangfan Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 Why does WOS have to be able to beat WB, Central or PAM to be ranked #1 or #2 in the area? Shouldnt it be how teams do in their own division and level of competition? WOS certainly stacks up in its division as good as any of these and probably better. Last year the best team in the area was certainly Newton but we know they couldnt beat Westbrook, so did they not deserve to be #1? They handled their division better than anyone.
KFDM COOP Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 When the new rankings come out we have them in Districts as well.
#1stangfan Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 That sounds good. But in the overall rankings compaing WB to Central, WOS, Newton etc is comparing apples to oranges. A 5-5 WB team would always beat a solid Newton team that would go much farther in the playoffs than WB. Im just saying that the smaller schools have a much harder time being ranked high if they are judged on their ability to beat a 5A or 4A school. For one large overall ranking system, it seems more fair to judge based on how a team performs or would perform within its classification.

Newton has a chance at the state title again. WO-S also has a good shot at a title. Central and Ozen might go three games deep. Nederland might make it two. On the other hand, West Brook might beat all of them on the field but also might be a good candidate to be beaten in first playoff game. So do your rankings look like: 1. Newton 2. WO-S 3. Central 4. Ozen 5. Nederland 6. West Brook With West Brook likely beating all other teams in the area, it looks equally strange to have them ranked 6th because they have a harder playoff route in their classification. About the only way you could make it fair, it to break it up in each class and come out with 5 polls every week like the state polls. Since this poll is nothing more than a conversation starter for teams in this area, what is the difference?
#1stangfan Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 Their route isnt any harder than WOS, Nederland or Newton etc. They are 5A so that is their level of competition. Sure it would be a harder route for Nederland, Central etc but they are not 5A. If WB were the only 5A school in the area and the rest were 2A and 3A we would have to just leave WB at the top and let everyone else duke it out for #2. If the people making the polls feel that WB is a team that will lose in the first round of the playoffs then they should not be #1. If they feel that other teams will dominate their respective divisions while WB goes one and out then yes these teams should be ranked ahead of WB. In the Orange Leader a few years ago there was a similar poll that came out on Tuesdays(KFDM was a part of it as well at one point) and the 5A teams were'nt always #1. Newton, Jasper, WOS etc were often the #1 teams even though Westbrook, Central(5A at the time) etc maybe would have beaten them, even though the 5A teams might not have even made the playoffs. "Since this poll is nothing more than a conversation starter for teams in this area, what is the difference?" That is exactly what it has done...start a conversation. The poll doesnt mean anything in the grand scheme of things. However if I am going to come on here for information etc, then I just felt like putting my two cents in on the validity of the poll. I enjoy the site and just wanted to share my thoughts on the poll after reading the thread.
