schlager7 Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 The Galveston Fencing Club will host the 3rd annual Jean Laffite Classic fencing tournament on Saturday, April 25, 2009. The competition will be held in the gym of the Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church, 2803 53rd Street (at Avenue U), Galveston, TX, 77551. Spectators are admitted free of charge. Competitions will be held in senior mixed foil, senior mixed epee and senior mixed sabre. Competitions designated as "senior" means the allowed age range for competitors is 13 years of age and up. Competitions designated as "mixed" meand they are not gender-segregated, that is, men and women compete against each other. Additionally, the Laffite Classic is a "U-only" meaning fencers who have already acquired a letter/year ranking are not allowed, on fencers so fat not classified/ranked. In foil points may only be scored with the tip of the weapon (where did you think the term "points" in sports came from?) and only the torso is valid target. In epee (pronounced: eh PAY) points may only be scored with the tip and the entire body from head to toe is valid target. In sabre points may be scored with tip or edge and everything from the hips up is considered valid target. It was also much better than most newpaper articles on fencing. The writer didn't constantly insert "en garde" and "touche" into every other paragraph...
