KFDM COOP Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 BC's Miller wins 21-3A singles title; OF teams net second Van Wade The Orange Leader BEAUMONT — Both the Orangefield boys and girls tennis squads finished second at the District 21-3A Tennis Championships earlier this week. In boys singles Orangefield’s Tyler Angelle toppled West Orange-Stark’s Carlos Cardenas 6-1, 6-1 and Bobcat Bradley Worthy downed WO-S’ Eugene Gill 6-3, 6-0. In the semifinals, Worthy toppled Bridge City’s Logan Bryant 6-0, 6-2 and Angelle fell to eventual district champion Matthew Deaver of Silsbee 6-0, 6-1. In the finals, Deaver downed Worthy 6-0, 6-0 while Angelle knocked off Bryant 6-0, 6-0 in the third-place match. In the playback for regionals, Worthy downed Angelle 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. In first round action WO-S’ Cardenas topped Bridge City’s Tyler Landrum 6-3, 6-4 and WO-S’ Gill downed Hardin-Jefferson’s Cody Perkins 6-0, 6-0. BC’s Bryant defeated Hamshire-Fannett’s Colton Romero 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. In girls singles, Bridge City’s Meredith Miller stormed to the district title. In the quarterfinals Miller defeated H-F’s Shelby Mason 6-0, 6-0. She toppled Silsbee’s Kaitlyn Alexander 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals and then downed Orangefield’s Hannah Parker in the title match. Parker downed BC’s Allison Stewart 6-0, 6-0 in the quarters and defeated Silsbee’s Kathryn Adams 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals. In first round action H-F’s Mason downed WO-S’ Kayliegh Thompson 6-1, 6-1. H-J’s Abby Maxwell downed Orangefield’s Elana Newell 7-5, 6-1 and H-J’s Bexi Castillo topped WO-S’ Zoe Simien (6-4, 7-6 (8-6). In boys doubles the WO-S tandem of Dillin Lantin and Sam Webb advanced to regionals by winning a playback. In the quarterfinals Lanting and Webb defeated H-J’s Cale Corbello and Jon Spell 6-0, 6-1 and fell to eventual district champions Terry Affolter and Nolan Nix 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals. They bounced back to defeat Silsbee’s James Trabing and Hosien Zare 6-2, 6-1 and then earned the regional spot by tasking down H-F’s Chris Bell and Blake Tiner 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in a thriller. In first round action Orangefield’s Matt Talbot and John Tyler downed Silsbee’s Kyle Eaton and Dakota Roy 4-6, 6-0, 7-6; Bridge City’s Matt Cain and Jake Dionne fell to H-J’s Corbello and Spell 6-4, 6-1; and Orangefield’s Caleb Powell and Dylan Wilson fell to Silsbee’s Trabing and Zare 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). In the quarters Orangefield’s Talbot and and Tyler fell to Affolter and Nix 6-2, 6-0; BC’s Sawyer Hogan and Sam Placette lost to Trabing and Zare 6-2, 6-4) and WO-S’ Dammi Busari and Eliseo Villanueva fell to Bell and Tiner 6-1, 6-3. In girls doubles in the quarterfinals Orangefield’s Shelby Price and Alison Yu won by default over H-J’s Blake McGlaun and Taylor Sutherland while Lady Bobcat teammates Skyler Murphy and Cheyenne Williams downed WO-S’ Gabi Saucier and Cassie Thompson 6-2, 6-2. Price and Yu fell to Silsbee’s district champions Brittany Burrell and Rachel Easley 6-1, 6-1 and Murphy and Williams fell to runnerups Victoria Gardner and Jentry Lloyd 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. For third-place, Murphy and Williams downed Price and Yu 6-3, 6-3. In first round action WO-S’ Saucier and Thompson downed H-J’s L. Castillo and K. Sanford 6-3, 6-3. BC’s Autumn LeGault and Marissa Underwood fell to H-F’s A. Martin and K. Spoonemoore 6-1, 6-2; and WO-S’ Leigh Ann Dallas and Christyn Harris lost to H-F’s A. Alfaro and B. Livingston 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. In mixed doubles Orangefield’s Toliver Grimes and Rachel Reed topped Silsbee’s Alex Freeman and Lacy Langham 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. They fell to H-F’s district champions Kurtis Bell and Ashley Gentry 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals and fell to Silsbee’s Blake Brewer and Kolbie Kruft 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) for third. The Orangefield duo of Bria Crain and Robert Ehrlich lost to Silsbee’s Brewer and Kruft 6-2, 6-2 in the quarters. Silsbee won the girls team title while H-F won the boys. H-F was third in the girls division while Silsbee was third in the boys.
