baddog Posted April 18, 2009 Report Posted April 18, 2009 I don't know if this is the worst trade for the Stros, but the 12 player deal with Caminitti, Finley and Co. to SD, for Brocail and other players, seems to be one I remember. Luis Gonzalez to Chicago, then failing to resign him on his return......ouch.
Guest 11/13Dad Posted April 18, 2009 Report Posted April 18, 2009 Johan Santana sound familiar to anyone... IMO the alltime worst trade the guy's a complete ACE now and we wouldnt be talkin so much about the astros rotation if we still had him Seriously? When and who far? Who was the GM? Again, Johan Santana was not a trade gone bad. The Astros, probably under Hunsicker, left him unprotected and the Twins grabbed him in the Rule 5 draft in 1999. Would still have to be considered major blunder by front office.
Let’sGetAlong Posted April 18, 2009 Report Posted April 18, 2009 I think you got it baddog...the Randy Johnson trade wasn't that bad...it was for the moment...Kevin Brown was just unstoppable for the Padres. I'm not saying it was a good trade...there's just been a lot worse. Letting Carlos Beltran go...that's a bad thing??? Are you kidding ??? The Mets are paying him a rediculous about of money and does he even put up .300 30/100??? Just a thought...it seems to me his numbers have been going down since drug testing...hmmmm.
Guest 11/13Dad Posted April 18, 2009 Report Posted April 18, 2009 Another one missed on here, trading a future World Series winner (and probable Hall of Famer) in Curt Schilling. Also, mentioned above was Nolan Ryan who was not traded, but a major brain fart. The Randy Johnson trade involved Freddy Garcia. They rented him for 3 prime prospects. If he would have stayed a season or two may have been worth it.

Then he went out and was a freaking bust.
Guest etbu Posted April 18, 2009 Report Posted April 18, 2009 Yea here it is and year was 89. Check this out. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/clancji01.shtml?redir

You're right, Ryan was not a trade, the Stros just didn't want to pay him a million bucks.......duh....Nolan Ryan?? Rizon got the Beltran thing right. The Stros threw about 17.5 million per season at him and he went to NY for 18, if I remember correctly. At least that's close to the figures.
MIF04 Posted April 18, 2009 Report Posted April 18, 2009 1. Joe Morgan -- Hall of Famer 2. Mike Cuellar -- was 20 game winner for Orioles on multiple occasions 3. Rusty Staub -- hit when he was skinny and hit when he was not-so-skinny 4. Ken Camminitti/Steve Finley -- Cammy just became the NL MVP 5. John Mayberry -- became All Star at KC 6. Curt Schilling -- probable Hall of Famer 7. Kenny Lofton -- didn't he play until he was, like, 50? 8. Billy Wagner -- Billy the Kid kept saving games until his arm gave up 9. Dave Guisti -- for a washed up catcher (Johnny Edwards). 10. Brad Lidge -- probably best for both sides but he did not blow a single save opportunity last year...ever. A "dishonrable mention" for the Willy Taveras trade....not because of what we lost but because we got stuck with Jason Jennings (if you look up 'bust' in the dictionary, his picture is there). Not signing Ryan, though, may be the single biggest front office blunder (although that was purely former owner John McMullen's call). Not only did we lose a Hall of Famer, but a hometown guy who was the 'face' of the franchise...and who had a couple more no-hitters in him. Losing Randy Johnson hurt but that was a long shot when they traded (rented) for him. Beltran parlayed one really good 1/2 season into 18 million dollars...and saved us 17.5 million of it. I forgot about Santana (man, who woulda thunk that?). On the other hand, sometimes it works the other way. The 'Stros traded a frontline bullpen guy (Larry Anderson) to the Red Sox who were making a playoff run for a prospect...who grew up to be Jeff Bagwell, who won a MVP and should one day be in Hall of Fame. Along with Biggio, became the 'new' faces of the franchise. NEXT TOPIC: All time worst trades (besides the Astros)? Start with these: Mets deal Nolan Ryan to Angels for aging (and unproductive) Jim Fregosi. Cubs trade Lou Brock to St. Louis for over-the-hill pitchers (Broglio and Shantz). Red Sox trade Bagwell for Larry Anderson. Padres trade Ozzie Smith for Gary Templeton. The list goes on and on...
Guest 11/13Dad Posted April 18, 2009 Report Posted April 18, 2009 Great recap MIF04. Some 411 here also http://www.astrosdaily.com/history/worsttrades.html
Chazz Reinhold Posted April 18, 2009 Report Posted April 18, 2009 the reason beltran left is because of his agent....scott boras. boras demands money for his clients. other than pudge, who else since beltran left was a client of Scott Boras? none. as for the worst trade of all time....2 years ago: brad lidge for michael bourne. as of now its a bad trade but ask me again in 3 years and it could be a different story. since the trade lidge hasnt blown a save and the phillies have won the world series.....and bourn has hit somewhere around .240. yeah i know trade value of lidge then was TERRIBLE, but the outcome is what truely matters and so far its gone the way of the Phillies. Dan Wheeler and Chad Qualls are doing good now. Who did the Stros get for tradeing them? qualls was involved in the valverde trade....id say thats been pretty even. dan wheeler was traded for wigginton.....a stros win on that one.
KDOSullivan Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 Guisti for Johnny Edwards.....Edwards couldn't run, literally. I remember Edwards did an ad for "BB plug chewing tobacco." Rusty Staub, couldn't field, couldn't throw, couldn't run, but man could he hit the ball.

Heck, breeze through these....http://www.astrosdaily.com/files/trans/trades.html
shovel Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 The worst trade had to be losing Morgan, but the Caminiti/Finley trade is right there too. Not a trade, but biggest blunder was letting Ryan go. I still miss Nolan Ryan!
