Cardinals take down WO-S, 6-0

Gabe Pruett

The Orange Leader

BRIDGE CITY — The Bridge City Cardinals beat two things Friday, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs and the rain.

The Cardinals defeated the Mustangs 6-0 Friday at Cardinal Field about 10 minutes before the expected rain began to fall Friday evening.

Caleb Kellogg helped make it a quick affair by pitching a gem on the mound for Bridge City (20-2-1, 8-0) who clinched the District 21-3A championship with the victory.

West Orange-Stark (11-11, 4-4) is still clinging to playoff dreams. The Mustangs are a game behind the Orangefield Bobcats and Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns.

Orangefield (17-8, 4-3) was trailing Silsbee, 5-2, in the bottom of the sixth before the game was postponed until Monday. The Longhorns/Hardin-Jefferson game was also postponed on Friday.

Kellogg worked six innings against the Mustangs and allowed four hits with 10 strike outs and two walks.

Freshman Matt Menard was 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBI and one run.

Menard had a two-run double to center in the bottom of the second to make it 2-0 Bridge City.

The double scored Dylan Mulhollan and Eric Matthews.

Menard picked up another RBI in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI single to left to score Anthony Cessac to make it 3-0.

Menard later scored when Joe Robertson laced a RBI double into left to make it 4-0.

Kellogg, who reached on a double, scored in the bottom of the fifth on a WO-S error.

Robertson scored the Cardinals final run of the night off a wild pitch to make it 6-0.

Matt Hicks was 2-for-4 with two doubles.

Taylor Bonnin, Clayton Gearhart and Justin Sparrow each had hits for the Mustangs. Gearhart singled twice and was 2-for-2.

Cody Hodge worked all six innings for the Mustangs. Hodge gave up 10 hits with three strike outs and two walks.

Blake Snyder worked 2/3 innings for the Cardinals and had two strike outs and Daniel Wallace faced the last batter and got a strike out.

Bridge City returns to action Tuesday with a home game against Orangefield while WO-S will be at home to face Hardin-Jefferson.
