LITTLE CYPRESS — First it was Little Cypress-Mauriceville rolling, then it was Lumberton and finally the Bears got the hard-fought win.

LC-M jumped out to a 9-0 lead after the first three innings only to watch as Lumberton fought back.

LC-M (19-11, 10-3) defeated Lumberton (11-15-2, 5-8) 10-6 on Senior Night which celebrated the efforts of 11 players.

The Bears win also gave Vidor a reason to smile as the Pirates clinched the fourth playoff spot in District 20-4A even after losing to Nederland on Monday, 9-0.

LC-M was up 4-0 after two innings and then erupted for five runs in the bottom of the third.

After Brandon Landry drove in Taylor Thompson on a sacrifice fly, Tim Barry later had a three-run blast to deep center field scoring Wade Estes and Scott Vaughn.

Stefan Leger, who walked, later came in to score when Matt Johnson had his second RBI double of the night.

Johnson’s first RBI double came in the first inning and put LC-M up 1-0 when Barry scored.

Johnson cross home plate to make it 2-0 in the bottom of the first when Thompson hit a RBI single to right field.

Two more Bears scored in the bottom of the second to make it 4-0 LC-M.

Vaughn led off by getting hit by a pitch and Dallas Brown followed that up with a walk.

Leger plated both runners with a two-run singled to left field.

The Raiders were not done playing baseball as Lumberton scored four runs in the top of the fourth.

West Bingham led the inning off with a solo home run. Tyler Wilson made it 9-2 when he scored as Corey Lemaire was hit by a pitch.

Trace Freeman then crossed home when Skylar Stampley was issued a walk and Ryan Hughes picked up a RBI fielder’s choice to score Ty Choate to make it 9-4.

Bingham would score again in the top of the fifth as Parker Harris hit a RBI double to center.

Barry scored for the third time for LC-M in the bottom of the fifth after leading off with a single to left.

Johnson picked up his third RBI of the night with a single to right to score Barry.

Wilson plated Lumberton’s final run of the night with a RBI single to center in the top of the sixth to score Tyler Erickson.

Thompson worked two different times on the mound for LC-M and allowed one run in 3 1/3 innings and gave up four hits with two strike outs. Barry went three innings for LC-M and struck out five with three hits and one run.

Wilson did a nice job in relief for Lumberton as he worked the final two innings and kept silenced the LC-M bats. He gave up two hits and struck out five of the six batters he faced.

LC-M will finish the district schedule Friday when it travels to face Beaumont Ozen.

    • Regardless of the offense, kids need a reason or purpose to play football. Normally, for most kids, football is something they genuinely enjoy playing, because most players won’t be suiting up on Saturdays. At the end of the day, the most successful teams have kids and coaches that genuinely love the game and get joy and fulfillment playing it.  Vidor’s two current biggest issues are the lack of appeal to play the game and a lack of community support. The offense has been the same for years, and Mathews did a great job of getting the kids and community behind his teams year in and year out. Vidor’s whole identity was being a team you hated to play because you knew you were in for a long physical night. That made the game fun for the kids who played, and they took a lot of pride in it. Currently, I would argue that the toxic attitude of the community towards the offense and Dubois in general is the biggest thorn in the team’s side. The need for instant gratification from fans is what is fueling it all. When the players go home or out in the community and hear: how bad the offense is, how bad the defense is, or how bad the coaching is, the players will begin to lose pride in the program, and the game is no longer fun. This leads to discipline issues and players quitting. Vidor has lost their identity and Dubois and the offensive scheme isn’t the culprit. The Vidor community needs to leave their objections of who they hired at the door and let the man work if they wanna be successful in the future.
    • We will see i heard they pretty dam good 3 losses but all to great teams
    • Yes. May have been Jimmies. What I’m seeing is a lot more teams going back to more ‘traditional style’ offenses. These things go in cycles, and it’s very difficult for all but mega schools to consistently find QB’s who can really be effective with a true spread type offense year in and year out. I’d venture to guess most schools have an outstanding QB that can win a game almost on their own only every few years if that, and that’s what you need for the ‘high flying’ spreads. So coaches go for the O’s that they can groom the majority of kids to be successful running, and take advantage of the superstar’s skills more within that O when they get them.
