shorttexas1 Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 I saw my boy Dickie call Boutte the 2nd best coach ever in SETX, to only Gamble... So I started looking at the best coaches in Texas history.... I came up with Robert Hughs, Fred Williams, James Gamble, and Jackie Carr... I like Boutte but I have a tough tim putting him over Robert Hughs, Fred Williams (tie), James Gamble, and Jackie Carr... What do you all say?
Lazeek Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 No opinion on the coaching but I do have one opinion.....your grammer sucks!!!!!!!!
shorttexas1 Posted April 28, 2009 Author Report Posted April 28, 2009 Yeah... I was so excited to post it that I got ahead of myself... Figured I would get a few comments (jokes) about that!
Guest DickVitale Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 First of all, that was NOT MY COMMENT! He was called the second best in SE Texas history, and I ASKED second to who? Gamble? I have MUCH respect for all those coaches listed and after all those years of experience I would not expect Boutte to be put before them....BUT in my opinion at the 22 year mark in his career, he has surpassed their accomplishments in many different ways.

Even Jackie Car? 5 State appearances and three Championships in an 8 yrs span. Or James Gamble with 4 State Championships in 7 years a too many appearances to count... Or Fred Williams who had three State Championship in 3 yrs and was cut a little short by the Beaumont integration! Yeah.. Yeah.. Yeah... I know Boutte was on those teams!
Guest DickVitale Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 Uhhh yes...Did you forget that I AM FROM HOUSTON....MY FATHER AND THESE GUYS ARE CLOSE FRIENDS... :....Jackie Carr did not become a head coach until he was almost 50....He won ONE UIL title in that span, the rest were PVIL...Hughes did not win a state title until 1993 after almost 40 years in....Gamble and Williams...It is what it is....at year 22, Boutte has done MORE....with LESS...Period.
AggiesAreWe Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 Uh Short, as far as state wide, you are leaving out many coaches that would rank ahead of Boutte.

shorttexas1 Posted April 28, 2009 Author Report Posted April 28, 2009 Like who???? Speak on it.. I am speaking of greatness here! James Mays, II has disqualified himself... So please give me a few examples! I am not talking about GOOD coaches! Ok I will add Royce Huseman!
Guest DickVitale Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 No, the fact is I KNOW these coaches personally and understand their paths to where they are, thats all..People do not know that Coach Carr was an assistant to a legend for YEARS before he became head coach at Wheatley..BET YOU DIDNT KNOW THAT EITHER!!!! Bet you don't even know WHO he coached under either.....HE WON MORE GAMES THAN ALL OF EM!!!! 8)

shorttexas1 Posted April 28, 2009 Author Report Posted April 28, 2009 You heard me tell you that before!!! > > You are a character!
Guest DickVitale Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 Did you know that Collin Briggs was a BASEBALL guy that was asked to coach basketball at Wheatley...I was told that he acted like he HATED coaching basketball, and was KILLING opponents and winning championships for years!!! Coach Gamble was a TRACK & FIELD guy!!! FYI BTW I would nit put James Mays from SOC with the greats anyway....LONGEVITY of greatness is the measure...I have a list.

Does this mean Valvano does not qualify as a great coach?
shorttexas1 Posted April 28, 2009 Author Report Posted April 28, 2009 No it means that Southerland doesn't LMAO And the Mays thing was a joke since Aggies wanted to add more to the list!

Does this mean Valvano does not qualify as a great coach? Honestly...no. He was a good coach in his time and won a title in 1983, but because he was a courageous guy with a great story does not put him in the conversation with John Wooden, Dean Smith or Coach K...
AggiesAreWe Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 No it means that Southerland doesn't LMAO And the Mays thing was a joke since Aggies wanted to add more to the list! I am just saying, when you are talking "all time greats" in the entire state, there are more than just the 3 or 4 that you have mentioned. You didn't mention Bill Kruger or Cotton Robinson, both Hall of Famers. There are several others, too many to name. Boutte is a great coach, I have said that many times. But this list isn't as short as DV wants to say that it is ahead of Andre as an All Time coaching great in Texas. I would put Boutte in the top 20 though.
Guest DickVitale Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 I could go with putting him in the top 20....I was thinking along those lines...I KNOW about the great coaches in this state and it is some very elite company!
Guest spinks Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 So if Boutte never coaches again how do you guys evaluate his career if longevity is indeed a standard to be judged by?
Guest DickVitale Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 Fred Williams only coached for 18 years....Gamble coached for 24, then 1 more in 1999....Boutte has 3 state championships, 9 final four appearances, 7 championship game apperances, and 21 district titles...(ONLY year he did not win district when Ozen first opened and was playing JV only schedule in 1998) has won almost 85% of his games....Although I personally think that he will coach again, if he does not, he has done more than MOST coaches with longer tenures.

There is a slight correction to your post. It's correct that Boutte did not win district in '98 but his team did play a varsity schedule. It was just with freshmen and sophs. He took his lumps that year with the underclassmen but they did play varsity ball.
Guest DickVitale Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 They DID play a varsity schedule that first year, but I dont think they were allowed to go to the playoffs that first year...I don't even think they played varsity teams during district...Check on that again.
