AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas officials are postponing all high school athletic competition until May 11 because of the swine flu outbreak.

The move suspends the baseball season and eliminates the regional track championships, said University Interscholastic League Executive Director Charles Breithaupt. He said UIL officials acted on the recommendation of public health officials.

The state golf and tennis championships are scheduled to begin May 11.

The state track meet, one of the largest high school track and field competitions in the country, remains scheduled for May 13-14. But it will require shuffling the schedule significantly.

All UIL academic competitions are postponed as well.

Regional Track Meets

All UIL regional track meets originally scheduled for this weekend, May 1-2, have been

cancelled. The state track and field meet will be extended to a three-day format to include

semifinal heats. The meet is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May

14-16.

Semifinal qualifiers will be based on the district track meet results. Each region will be

represented at the state meet by the top four performances in each event for all conferences.

Hand-held times will be converted to fully automatic times as defined by the National

Federation of State High School Association rules. A revised track and field state meet

schedule will be posted on the UIL web site no later than Friday, May 1. Qualifiers to the

UIL state track and field meet will be posted on the UIL web site on Wednesday, May 6.

Going to be some VERY dissapointed young athletes and parents (including me) over this turn of events.  Lots of athletes planning to peak at Region, won't get that chance.  Sad situation

They will still get to run. It is not a cancellation.

Not according to this:

"Semifinal qualifiers will be based on the district track meet results. Each region will be

I read that as the top 4 performers from each REGION based on district results.  A whole lot more than 4 qualified for region.

Hopefully sanity prevails and the UIL makes some other adjustments... otherwise, no Joe Dooley in the mile (cruised to District win in 5.01 but saved a bunch to anchor their mile relay). 5.01 won't get in. Believe he's made it state every year. He'll prob still go in the 800 but woulda been nice to see him try to win both the 800 and 1600 at state. Pretty sure the times he has run around 4.30 all year are 10 to 15 seconds better than anyone else in the region, not to mention he is the defending region champion in the 800 and 1600.

Surely they can come up with a better solution. Comparing district times is ridiculous. Sure to be many examples like this (especially relays).

EDITED:

I read it as those who qualified for regionals out of their districts are running in the semifinals(replaces regionals)... the top four runners (from the semifinals) in each event FROM all conferences (or district, meaning all get to compete) advance to "state"....

Simply put...All regional qualifiers get to compete and the top 4 from each region will advance. Still sounds weird because that means 16 athletes in each event at state... and I've never seen 2 heats at a state meet.

Posters Kris Gilmore and cardinalcc should know what this means, maybe they'll chime. I know that one or both of them is a coach with kids who have a lot at stake.

The release statement was, IMO, very vaguely if not poorly written. Or, maybe I'm just not smart enough to read UIL jargon.

I believe that this means that the top 4 times from each region will be taken to the state meet. They will extend the meet to 3 days. They will run semi-finals and take the 8 fastest times from the semi-finals to finals.

I agree this is ridiculous. It will be very bad if they go by district times. The UIL rushed into this way too fast without really thinking this through.Too many things have to be considered. Handheld times being converted to FAT...how accurate are the hand held times going to be?What if a district had a 30mph backwind and a 100m runner goes 10.5? Or if a guy runs like a 4:30 mile and wins by 20 seconds while another guy runs a 4:29 and gets second? Many runners, especially distance runners just run to win and not run a fast time. These guys and girls are going to be the ones left out. Bumping the meets back a couple of weeks would make the most sense.

This is a great forum for running. There are both coaches and athletes that post on there. Many of the athletes are elites too, so they do know about running. They have a discussion going on about this right now. Hopefully this will help a little. Feel free to join in and voice your opinions.

It means the top 4 times ran at the district meets will make it to the state meet. That means as of right now my 1600 meter runner who is a sophmore(thank god) has run a 4:27 mile which is ranked 4th in the state, but because we have a slow slow district he has the 5th fastest time based off of district times.  Therefore he does not get to go.  On the other hand we have 3 girls and 2 boys who now are going to the state meet.
