LC-M grad Landry makes mark at MSU

Van Wade

The Orange Leader

LAKE CHARLES — Baseball fans at Little Cypress-Mauriceville would probably agree that just a handful of Bears had the true grit of former standout Shon Landry.

Whether it was making a diving play at shortstop, belting a towering home run over the fence at Don Gibbens Field, or even motivating his teammates, Bear fans know they had a gem.

Well Landry, The Orange Leader’s Baseball Player of the Year in 2004, carried that stout determination with him and has turned in a remarkable four-year stint at McNeese State University.

Landry has been a starter all four seasons for the Cowboys. He put up outstanding numbers his first three years on campus. However, his senior year is the one he’ll remember the most.

The shortstop has put together a .349 batting average, which is second among the team of starters. He leads the Cowboys with 58 hits and has five home runs and 33 runs batted in.

Shon broke his collarbone last week in a game with Texas State out for the rest of the season. Big loss for the Cowboys.

If anyone can come back it's Shon. I hope that my boys play the game as hard and with as much intensity as Shon does.

td I agree. I'm not sure I have EVER covered a player who plays with more intensity than Shon Landry. Great guy and player.

Hang around Gabe and hopefully in a few years you will have a few more like Shon coming up.  ;)

I don't think I'm going anywhere anytime soon, and I'm waiting for players like that again. Only a few like that these days.

I've told Shon this in the past and it still stands, I would love for him to come and coach and teach with me and the other guys I work with. He is welcome anytime he is ready. Hopefully for his sake he will be too busy this summer but he is welcome even if for one practice. He works really good with young kids and they seem to respond to him.

Speaking of the Landry boys, being around Shay (sp) this year was a real treat. He has worked into a really good coach. They are both welcome to come work with my young ones anytime. We were happy to have Coach Landry at WOS this year and we hope to have him back.  ;)

Agreed. Shay is a great guy and great coach.

There was one that played with the same intensity and she is a girl and they are cousins. I am really proud of my two newphews, Shay and Shon. Not because of sports but because both of them have college degree's. Tell you a little story about Shon. When he was little we could not keep clothes on that boy. He loved to run around naked. ;D ;D ;D

You can tell those two are cousins. But with that story, are you sure Shon ever grew up?  :D Sorry Shon

If anyone can comeback early, it will be Shon. He has given 100% and then some ever since Little League. Shon, Zane Williams, The Milligan brothers and some other young men were fun to watch when they played together at Memorial and then for the Green Hornets summer league team. Glad to see Shon and Zane are still playing with intensity and excitement. They were a pleasure to watch. Wish them both continued success.
