bacbone9 Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 Matt Cross has been hired as the head men's basketball coach at Lamar State-Port Arthur, the school said on Monday. "We've selected Matt Cross," said Bobby Summers, coordinator of public information for LSPA. "He was part of a very successful program at Talladega (Ala.) College." Cross guided Talladega College to a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association national title in the Tornadoes first year of competition following a hiatus of nearly a decade. Cross guided Talladega to a 25-7 record and was also the school's athletics director. Cross was in Alabama to announce his departure to the Tornadoes and could not be reached for comment Monday. The Tornadoes beat five Division I programs on their way to the title, Southern University and Grambling were among them. Cross takes over for Jerre Cole, who lasted just one season in Port Arthur. The Seahawks were 8-20 in 2008-09, the fifth season of the program's existence. Prior to Talladega, Cross was the head coach at Texas College in Tyler. He took over the team on an interim basis in December 2006 and was the full-time head coach the next season. The Steers advanced to the Red River Athletic Conference championship in 2008. Cross also spent three seasons as an assistant at Arkansas-Monticello.
