Bobcats batter Liberty, 11-0

BAYTOWN — Looking to make a statement in game one of their bi-district playoff series against Liberty, the Orangefield Bobcats accomplished their mission and then some pounding out 13 hits to take an 11-0 win over the Panthers in a five inning run-ruled game on Thursday night at Goose Creek Memorial High School.

Game Two will be played tonight at Bridge City with a game three if necessary also at Bridge City on Saturday afternoon.

Orangefield (21-9), wasted little time in jumping on Liberty by grabbing a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

"That was huge for us in grabbing the early lead," said Bobcat head coach Jeff Bennett. "This is their first playoff game together for this group of kids so getting an early lead gave them some confidence."

Winning pitcher Jace Statum started the game off with a single off of Liberty losing pitcher David Dedear. Jonathan Deramus and Jacob Felts then followed with walks to load the bases with no body out. Chase Angelle then made it 2-0 with a double to score both Statum and Deramus. Zach Peevey then followed with a long fly ball down the left field line that Liberty left fielder Byron Webb lost in the sun for a two-run double to make it 4-0. Qunton Evans then became the sixth consecutive hitter to reach via a single. Brock Whitson then scored Peevey with a sacrifice fly to center field for the final run of the inning.

Statum easily retired the Panthers in the bottom half of the inning to bring the hot bats back up for Orangefield. Once again it was Statum starting things by reaching an an error by the Liberty short stop. Felts then platted Statum home with a triple to make it 6-0. Angelle then scored Felts with a double to make it 7-0.

With the Bobcats pounding the baseball, the Panthers never stood a chance at the plate against Statum. The junior recorded nine of the first ten outs on strikeouts and finished the contest with 11. Statum allowed only three hits on the night to go along with three walks.

"Jace pitched very well for us tonight," said Bennett. "He is very competitive out there and showed that tonight."

The Bobcats then added four more runs in the third inning to extend the lead. Statum and Deramus both got RBI singles to make it 9-0. A couple of hitters later it was Evans delivering a two-run triple to put the lead into double digits.

"I told them afterwards that this is just one win and that tomorrow is another day," said Bennett. " We still need one more win to finish them off and move on the next round."
