Regional track meets ready to roll

Van Wade

The Orange Leader

The anxious wait will be over for Class 5A, 3A and 2A regional track participants starting today while Class 4A has a few more days to wait.

After waiting 30 days after the District 21-3A Track & Field Championships were over, Orange County representatives will hit the track and field events at Humble’s Turner Stadium today and Saturday.

Both the 5A and 3A will compete in Humble in the Region III Track & Field Championships.

Field events will begin at 8:30 a.m. today. The 3A running prelims will start at 1 p.m. followed by the 5A running prelims at 6 p.m.

Field events will start at 9 a.m. Saturday followed by the running finals at 1 p.m.

One of the strongest contingents at the meet will be the West Orange-Stark boys and girls, who qualified in 24 different events.

Mustang coach Toby Foreman says the Mustangs are raring to go after to long wait that included a two-week wait on regionals after the swine flu scare.

“We’ve given the kids a break here and there,†said Foreman. “We’ve cut practices short by a day each week. But we lengthened our other practices by 20 minutes or so. We’ve been working on our starts and concentrating on our field events well. The 30-day wait has seemed like forever but everyone else is in the same boat.â€

Mustang junior Trey Franks qualified for regionals in five events after winning the long jump, triple jump, 200 meters and 100 meters at district along with the swift 400-meter relay team that also consists of Josh Gloston, James Haynes and Phillip Jones.

Hayes was also four-event qualifier, making it in the 400-meter relay, the district-winning 800-meter relay along with finishing second in the 200 and the triple jump and third in the long jump.

Jones, meanwhile will represent in both the 300 and 110-meter hurdles as district champ.

Foreman is eager to see how the Mustangs fare with several stiff competitors waiting on the Mustangs, especially in the three relays.

“There’s going to be some tough teams there,†said Foreman. “We’ve got Taylor and Silsbee to deal with in the relays. There is always a couple of those Waco schools that always show up and surprise folks. The 400-meter relay, that’s going to be a good one. We’ve got to be consistent with our handoffs and timing. The other two relays, you don’t as much with handoffs, but that will be key in the sprint relay.â€

The Class 2A Track & Field Championships will be held at Whitehouse High School.

Field events will begin at 9 a.m. today followed by the running prelims at noon. Field events will crank up again Saturday at 9 a.m. followed by the running finals at noon.

The Class 4A Region III Track & Field Championships will be held Monday and Tuesday at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.

On Monday, field events start at 11 a.m. followed by the running prelims at 4 p.m.

Field events will start at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and the running finals will take place at 12:30 a.m.
