TEL
LCM has a good club but they better pound the ball against Buda. These kids can flat out stroke. The catcher and cf has about 33 home runs between the two of them. Playing in a bigger park may hurt LCM a little bit but you never know.

KFDM COOP
Bears to tangle with red-hot Buda Hays Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Putting together a superb effort to knock off the Crosby Cougars in their Class 4A Region III bidistrict series, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears turn to an even taller task tonight when they tangle with the Buda Hayes Rebels at 7:30 p.m. in the area round at Texas A&M University’s Olsen Field. The Rebels (26-1), ranked No. 3 in the last Class 4A Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association poll, has won 20 consecutive games and breezed through District 17-4A unscathed. Hays took down a competitive Waller squad 8-3 and 10-3 in its bidistrict series last week. The Rebels only loss came to Austin McNeil 10-3 back on March 3. Hays has outscored their opposition 292-97 for the season and have close to 60 home runs. “They hit the ball very well, up and down their lineup,†said LC-M head coach Steve Griffith, who has 401 victories to his credit. “They’ve got a couple powerful kids with 15 or more homers.†The Rebels’ “ringer†is certainly catcher Nick Desantiago. The senior backstop has 17 home runs and is headed to the University of Texas. He was 4-for-5 with a big home run in the clincher over Waller. “He’s a good one,†said Griffith. “He’s just as good defensively as he is on offense.†The Rebels will still likely miss the services of senior outfielder Brandon Lawrence. Lawrence, who has 15 homers, was leading the squad with a .560 average before breaking his ankle three weeks back. The cupboard is far from bare though as the Rebels have other big hitters in infielder Anthony Pesina, Philip Abreo, Ryan Slaughter, Colten Boothe, Trace Gandy, Luke Guerrero and Rusty Logue all have inflated averages. The Rebels also have two solid go-to pitchers in seniors Jon Gonzales and Chris Maldonado. “Their pitching is very good too,†said Griffith. “They don’t have a guy that’s going to wow you by throwing shutouts and striking out a lot of people. They’re very consistent though and their defense is really good. We’ve scouted them about three times and they’re a very solid baseball team.†Griffith was happy with the way the Bears (23-12) responded in coming back and taking Game Three against Crosby 4-2 Saturday. The Bears won Game One of that series 5-1 before falling 12-11 late in Game Two. Senior Tim Barry had a huge Game Three, hitting two home runs and earning the win on the hill. The Bears have a nice veteran senior team with the likes of the experienced Barry, Stefan Cloeren, Stefan Leger, Matt Johnson, Dallas Brown and Wade Estes leading the way. Plus, the pitching of Shane Waddell and Taylor Thompson has been strong as well. “I was glad to see the kids respond like they did Saturday against Crosby,†said Griffith. “Crosby has an excellent team and they gave us a good series. I had the wrong shoes on last Friday when we lost and I think that gave us bad luck but I had the right ones on Saturday.†Due to the swine flu pushing back the baseball playoffs, the area round series across the state have to all be one-game deals, which is fine with Griffith. “Even if that didn’t happen, we’d probably would’ve tried to flip for one game,†said Griffith. “Anything can happen in those one-game deals. Beating a team two-out-of-three times can be tough if you’re playing a team that’s won 26 out of 27. Our kids are really looking forward to this challenge and see how it all works out.†The LC-M-Hays winner will face the Brenham-Barbers Hill winner in the regional quarterfinals later in the week. Brenham downed Elgin 12-1 and 14-0 in bidistrict while Barbers â€ill defeated Vidor 13-3, 1-6, 10-1.
