KFDM COOP
LC-M pulls off upset over No. 3 Buda Hays, 5-4, in 9 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader COLLEGE STATION — Win No. 402 for Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears coach Steve Griffith probably made his blood pressure go to dangerous levels. The Bears were down 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh to No. 3 Buda Hays before scoring four to tie it to set up a game-winning hit by Stefan Leger in the bottom of the ninth to give LC-M a 5-4 win. LC-M will now face their familier rival Brenham Cubs in the Class 4A Region III Regional Semifinals later this week. Tim Barry in the bottom of the ninth hit a one out single to right and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Leger then stroked a single down the right field line and Barry slid head first to send the Bears (24-12) the Rebels home with a 26-2 record. The Rebels led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh before the Bears offense finally came alive. Taylor Thompson led things off with a single to right before Wade Estes drew a walk. Scott Vaughn then plated the Bears first run of the game with a RBI single to make it 4-1. After Shane Waddell drew walk, the Rebels got two quick strike outs. Stefan Leger put the ball in play and Buda Hays did LC-M a favor by committing an error to allow Estes and Vaughn to score to make it 4-3. Stefan Cloeren then made sure the night was not over with a RBI siingle to tie the score at 4-4. LC-M had a golden opportunity slip away in the bottom of the eighth. Thompson led off with a double off the fence and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Estes. The Rebels then intentionally walked Vaughn. Buda Hays then got a double play on a squeeze bunt attempt by Waddell. The ball was popped up and caught for the second out and courtesy runner Joey Tutt was forced out at third. Waddell pitched a great game for the Bears. Waddell went six innings and struck out six batters with four hits and two walks. Waddell only gave up two earned runs. Dallas Brown was the winning pitcher of the night. Waddell started off in grand fashion sitting down the first two Rebel batters in the first inning. Waddell struck out Nick Desantiago and got Phillip Abreo to fly out to centerfielder Hunter Gonzalez. The Rebels then put two runners on base after two straight LC-M errors. Colten Booth then made the Bears pay for the mistakes with a two-RBI double to right field to make it 2-0 Buda Hays. The Bears put the first two batters on base in the bottom of the first as Tim Barry and Stefan Leger led off with back-to-back singles. Jonathan Gonzales then got a fly out by Stefan Cloeren and a fielder’s choice by Matt Johnson. Gonzales then got Taylor Thompson to strike out to end the threat with runners stranded on the corners. The Bears avoided more damage in the top of the second. Waddell got two quick outs before a walk and then ended the inning as Desantiago flew out to Cloeren at shortstop. The Bears picked up their second hit of the game in the bottom of the second as Scott Vaughn hit a one-out single to center field. Vaughn was stranded at first as Gonzales got a strike out and fly out to end the inning with Buda Hays up 2-0. Booth picked up his third and fourth RBI of the game in the top of the third with a two-run blast to left field to make it 4-0. The Bears stranded their fourth runner of the game in the top of the third as Cloeren was left on first after reaching on a fielder’s choice. Barry led the bottom of the third off with a walk. Waddell got his first three-up, three-down inning in the top of the fourth on a strike out and two fly balls. Gonzales followed up with a three-up, three-down inning of his own in the bottom of the fourth to keep Buda Hays up 4-0. Waddell finally figured out how to get Booth out in the top of the fifth. The Rebels put two runners on with two outs on a fielder’s choice and an infield single. Waddell got Booth to fly out to Dallas Brown at first base to end the threat. Gonzales sat down the side in the bottom of the fifth. Waddell sat the Rebels down in order in the top of the sixth. He picked up his fifth and sixth strike outs of the game in the inning before getting a fly out to end the inning. Gonzales got his 12th straight out in the bottom of the sixth, sitting down the Bears in order again on two fly outs and a ground out to shortstop. The Rebels put two runners on in the top of the seventh but relief pitcher Dallas Brown got out of the jam with a double play.
Gabe
This story would not have been possible without the dedication of Gary @ KOGT. His play by play made it possible for me to do this so easily. Kudos once again Gary, I owe ya one.
