KFDM COOP Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 PA puts coaching hire on hold -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- www.panews.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The temporary Port Arthur superintendent says school trustees won't have time tonight to vote on a new head football coach-athletic director. Even if they did, there's some question whether or not they would have the authority. A superintendent's recommendation and a board vote on who'll be the next head coach-athletic director at Memorial High cannot come before next Thursday, Feb. 16, temporary superintendent Larry Redmond said Wednesday. That means Marvin Sedberry, Shane Sinegal, Ronnie Thompson, Finis Vanover and Doug Wood, the five finalists to replace Dean Colbert, will stay in limbo another week. "It was explained to me they might not get to it (tonight)," Thompson said Wednesday evening. "I'd heard a rumor that would be the case," said Sinegal, who, like Thompson, is a Port Arthur native and city council member. Originally, the agenda for tonight's 5 p.m. special session included four items, preceded by a closed-door executive session. Trustees were to consider two items involving losses from Hurricane Rita and ongoing internal and external audits of district operations. The third and fourth items were to "consider, and, if appropriate, accept recommendation from Superintendent for hiring" of a new Memorial High principal and a coach/AD. "The last two will be tabled. They won't come up until the following week," Redmond said Wednesday afternoon. "We have a time problem." The PAISD trustees have a prior commitment at the Region 5 Education Service Center in Beaumont for a 7 p.m. training session mandated by the Texas Education Agency. They will only have about an hour's time for their meeting at PAISD's Stilwell Center. But the TEA says it wouldn't be legal for Redmond to make hiring recommendations to the board tonight, even if time allowed. Redmond, the district's assistant superintendent for business and finance, was named temporary superintendent last Thursday when superintendent Willis Mackey resigned. The TEA says a temporary superintendent lacks the authority to recommend personnel. An interim superintendent can offer a candidate to be hired. Naming an interim superintendent is expected to be on the school board's agenda for next week. Voting on a principal and athletic director-coach could follow.
