KFDM COOP Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Mustangs look to tame the 3A heat in Austin Van Wade The Orange Leader AUSTIN — In the sweltering Austin heat, it’s going to be all about being “fast and furious†for the West Orange-Stark track team come Saturday. In a span of one hour, 35 minutes, the Mustangs will know where they stand in the Class 3A State Track & Field Championships. It will kick off for WO-S with the girls running the 400-meter relay at noon and will close with the boys running the 800-meter relay at 1:35 p.m. There will be four other events sandwiched between those two races. “We’ve already talked to some folks in Austin and they’re saying that down on the track the temperature will likely be between 110 and 115 degrees,†said WO-S head track coach Toby Foreman. “We’ve got several kids running two races and Trey Franks will be running three in about an hour and a half. We’re going to have to keep the kids hydrated well and have them heading back to those shaded tent areas as soon as each race is over.†The girls 400-meter relay quartet consisting of Brittany Brantley, Hannah Mobley, Johnesha Sims and Danyale Thomas will start things off at noon. That same foursome will come back to run the 800-meter relay at 1:25 p.m. The four were second behind Waco Connally in both the 400 relay (49.19) and the 800 relay (1:43.68) at regionals. “I really think our girls have a great shot at medaling,†said Foreman. “If they stay right there with Connally again, they’ll be in good shape. You have to watch out for Liberty-Eylau though, those kids can fly.†On the boys’ side, the Mustangs have turned in the fastest times in Class 3A this year in both the 400 and 800-meter relays. Franks, Josh Gloston, Phillip Jones and James Haynes won the regional meet in the 400 relay in 41.78 and the quartet of Gloston, Franks, Haynes and Ed Ivory won the 800 relay in 1:27.08. The 400 relay will run at 12:10 p.m. and the 800 relay at 1:35 p.m. “There’s going to be two excellent races there,†said Foreman. “Waco La Vega will really push us like they did at regionals. You also can’t count out Cuero and Dallas Madison. There regionals times, you can’t let that fool you. Both have had tremendous success at state over the years.†Jones will compete in the 110-hurdles at 12:55 p.m. after placing second at regionals with a 14.76. Franks will try to earn the tag of “Fastest Man in Class 3A†in the 100 meters at 1:15 p.m. Franks won at regionals with a 10.73 and has turned in a 10.38 this year. Haynes also qualified in the long jump after finished second at regionals with a 22-7 3/4 effort. He will jump today at 1:30 p.m. The Mustangs have had three weeks to prepare for state with the regional meet being held way back on May 15-16. “It’s been crazy, having nearly seven weeks between district and state,†said Foreman. “The kids are certainly ready to run and compete. The first week after regionals, we worked them hard. Last week, we mainly worked on execution, doing a little speed work and working in the grass and staying injury-free.†The Mustangs are sending 11 tracksters to Austin, the beauty of it - only one, Josh Gloston, is a senior. “Isn’t that amazing,†said Foreman. “Hopefully we can bring home a couple medals for Josh, who has meant so much to all of us for four years now. The future at West Orange-Stark looks promising.â€
