By JON DUSTIN BROOKS, News Messenger Sunday, June 14, 2009 With the upcoming release of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine looming this weekend, speculation will begin anew about the upcoming football season's top contenders when the publication hits the shelves. This time last year, much of the preseason buzz centered around District 13-4A, which featured newcomer Class 5A castoff Longview, along with traditional powers such as Texas High and Marshall. Courtney Case/News Messenger (ENLARGE) Marshall?s Eric McCowen, right, tackles Longview?s Tyler McCray with assistance from Darria Clough, 32, left, during a District 13-4A football game last fall in Marshall. Behind Auburn-bound quarterback Tyrik Rollison, Sulphur Springs also crashed the party, bringing home the league's lone football title, and, looking back, the district lived up to the billing, especially on the gridiron. It was the only Class 4A district to have a team in both the Division I and Division II championship games, combining to go 12-3 in the postseason. That got a reporter to thinking. How did the league stack up against the rest of its Class 4A brethren on a grander scale? After a couple days of research, a few charts were compiled to illustrate how the district fared across the board, in all of the UIL-sanctioned sports. Here's what the work uncovered. —- 2008-2009 CLASS 4A STATE CHAMPIONS FALL SPORTS Sport School Team Tennis Dallas Highland Park Boys Cross Country Boerne Champion Girls Cross Country Humble Kingwood Park Volleyball Hereford Football, Division I Austin Lake Travis Football, Division II Sulphur Springs SPRING SPORTS Sport School Swimming/Diving Dallas Highland Park Boys Wrestling Canyon Randall Girls Wrestling Amarillo Caprock Boys Basketball Houston Yates Girls Basketball Waco Midway Boys Soccer Hidalgo Early College* Girls Soccer Richardson Pearce Boys Golf Richardson Pearce Girls Golf Montgomery Boys Track & Field Lancaster Girls Track & Field Mansfield Timberview Softball New Braunfels Canyon Baseball Texarkana Texas High \—\—\— *Class 3A school (3A schools compete at the 4A level in soccer).
