Guest coachacola Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 Lamar University president Dr. Jimmy Simmons says, "We should begin, or we could begin the construction on the Provost Umphrey Stadium today, tomorrow. The bonds have been funded. And also the athletic complex, those are underway or should be underway, the process is underway and all we need to do is get the contractors out there and get the dirt moving and get the buildings remodeled." http://www.kbmt12.com/news/local/48114702.html

AJ25 Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 i thought that is where the softball field was supposed to go?
Guest coachacola Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 i thought that is where the softball field was supposed to go? I did too. I thought the soccer field was going to be on other side of Rolfe Christopher Road. I guess they are going to squeeze the softball field between the soccer field and Vincent-Beck?
AJ25 Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 Or they could just tear down some of the older run down buildings on, or around the campus. There is plenty of them.. lol
Guest coachacola Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 They are slowly buying the property in that neighborhood between LU, MLK and the highway. Eventually LU will own all that land, all the way to the Village at Lamar apartments. They also need to get rid of that cement company, that looks bad next to campus. And they need to plant more trees around Vincent-Beck and the new soccer stadium, that would help too. 10 years from now the campus will look a lot nicer with more dorms, academic buildings, landscaping, etc. It's long overdue if you ask me.
AJ25 Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 It's hard to keep locals around here when the campus looks like it does.. When people are getting accepted into A&M, UT, TCU, U of H, even TState.. There is no reason for them to stay. Lamar has to find a way to compete with those schools. A facelift is a good way to start.. and it looks like they're finally getting that going.

That's good to hear. I have wondered about that. Do you know how the land will be used?
AJ25 Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 I drove by it today, if they position the field correctly.. there is enough room in between the soccer and baseball field for the softball field..
kty1016 Posted June 21, 2009 Report Posted June 21, 2009 I thought that was going to be the softball fields too. Lamar Beaumont needs to get there softball program started soon lots of good talent in the area. ;D
