The Vidorian

Maybe folks will be watching a Major League Baseball game on television and they may see Cameron Perkins down on the field and recall. "I remember him growing up in Vidor.

It's not that far-fetched of an idea.  Perkins was drafted this year in the 43rd round by the Seattle Mariners, but opted out to enter Purdue University on a full scholarship, according to his mom Patty Boyett.  Perkins is also featured on the front cover of the May 2009 Vype High School Sports Magazine in Indiana.

"Cameron" lived 16 years in Vidor.  he spent his junior and senior years in Indiana after moving in with his dad.  He's a pretty good baseball player.  He's playing third base now and doing some pitching," she said.

This past year at Southport High School, Perkins had a staggering .730 batting average with 54 base hits in 74 at-bats - a state single season record.

For his first season at Southport, he belted 20 doubles, drove in 54 runs, stole 19 bases and hit nine home runs.  He actually hit 10, but had one called back due to a controversial call.

Perkins began in Vidor Little League at the age of 5.  He moved up to Vidor Youth Baseball and then to select teams, playing different teams at different tournaments in Houston and Lousiana.

"A lot of kids burn out on baseball, but not Cameron.  He played baseball, basketball and football in Vidor.  When he moved to Indiana, he wanted to just play baseball.  He gets his athletic ability from his Dad, but he gets his smarts from me," Boyett said.

In fact, Perkns graduated 17th in his class this year with over 400 students in Indiana.  Boyett went up to Indiana to see her son graduate and watch him play some baseball - the first time in a couple of years.

She added Kyle Green, head baseball coach, and Jeff Mathews, Vidor High School athletic director hated to see Perkins leave.

Boyett said Cameron won't tell her how much the Mariners offered him play, only he is focusing on being a college ball player.  If professional baseball doesn't work out, Perkins is working toward a degree in aviation to become an air traffic controller.

"He's 6-5, but he's skinny.  He weighs 195 pounds.  They can beef him up in college," she said.

Boyett said perkins also caught a "beloved Houston Astros" playing Cincinnati and in Chicago.  She reminded him if he does make it big, he better keep claiming he's from Vidor. "He's a really neat kid," Boyett said.
