There are 2 other locals representing southeast texas... Garrett Bourque of Lumberton and Jamil Peeples of Port Arthur.  Bourque finished 1st in the 100 hurdles and Peeples was a close second.. just .08 off of the lead.  Peeples finished 1sh in the 200 hurdles with Bourque on his heals by .04.  Both boys are ranked in the top 10 in the nation in the 200 hurdles.  Good luck to all of our southeast texas competitors at the junior olympics.

LaCour, Oubre have eye on gold at USATF

This week will be huge for two area athletes. Dayton’s own Cameron LaCour and Matthew Oubre will be traveling to Greensboro, North Carolina to participate in the USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships. Both will represent Track Houston, the team both have participated on.

The 43rd Annual Event will take place from July 28th- August 2nd at Irwin Bell Track Stadium on the campus of North Carolina’s A&T University.

Many of today’s Olympic stars began their track and field careers Competing in the USATF Championships.

Entry for this championship is based on athlete performances at preliminary, Association, and Regional levels of the 2009 USATF Junior Olympic Program. Competition takes place in five two-year age divisions, with athletes generally falling between the ages of 8 and 18.

LaCour, who just graduated from Dayton this past June won the Class 4-A State Championship in the 110-meter hurdles this past year in Austin. He will have the number one seed in the 110-meter hurdles at the USATF this week in the Young Men’s Division. LaCour will run today at 8:00 A.M. Should he qualify then, Cameron would run in the finals on Sunday at 1:30 P.M.

An incoming freshman this year at Dayton high school, Oubre will have twice the work as he will take part in the shot put and discus throw in the Youth Boys division.

Oubre will start his competition on the first day of the event which is Tuesday. He will throw the shot put at 9:00 A.M.

Should Oubre make the finals then he would compete in the finals of the shot put on Saturday at 12:00 P.M. Oubre then could be back at work the following day as the finals of the discus will take place on Sunday morning.

The USATF encompasses the world’s oldest organized sports, the most watched events of Olympic broadcasts, and is the #1 high school and junior high school participatory sport.

Good luck this week to Cameron and Matthew both as the world will be watching them.

Matthew Oubre won 7th place in the shot put, bringing home a medal for that event.  He placed 10th in the discus just missing a medal by 5 inches.  What a wonderful season it was for Matthew.  Well now it's on to football for him and beginning his Freshman year at Dayton.
