French striker Cheick Kongo (20-5-1) is negotiating to face former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir at UFC 107 on December 19th in Memphis, Tennessee.

Earlier rumors about the Wolfslair MMA Academy fighter stated that Kongo was looking to return to the octagon for the December show, now he may have the highly rated opponent he was looking for in Mir.

According to Sportsnet.ca “Mir’s camp has stated they have yet to hear of this fight request, but have stated they are definitely interested in fighting Kongo.â€

Kongo will be looking to bounce back after a poor showing at UFC 99 against Cain Velasquez. Velasquez dominated Kongo on the ground, but the American could not put the Frenchmen away and was awarded the win via unanimous decision. Kongo replaced an injured Heath Herring at the last minute in his fight with Velasquez. Some reports stated that a Kongo win would have earned him a title shot against the winner of the UFC 100 heavyweight championship fight between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir.

Frank Mir of course, is coming off of a loss to Brock Lesnar earlier this month in a title fight for the UFC heavyweight belt at UFC 100. Mir was pummeled in his fight by the much larger Lesnar, losing in the second round by technical knockout (Punches) at 1:48. Afterwards, Lesnar antics inside the octagon has proven controversial by bad mouthing Mir at the end of the bout, flipping off fans, and disrespecting the corporate sponsor. Lesnar apologized after the incident saying he was caught up in the moment.

If this rumor turns out to be true, then UFC 107 would have it’s second fight for the Memphis event. Headlining the show will be a bout between the TUF 10 coaches Quinton “Rampage†Jackson and Rashad Evans. Jackson made mention of the fight in a video while out at a club.
