KFDM COOP Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 Lady Cards Tennis at Baylor Invitational: Day Two Day two rough on Lamar Sept. 17, 2006 WACO, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team continued play at the Baylor Fall Invitational Saturday, with action in doubles and singles play. The Lady Cards struggled in singles play, but had success in doubles play, winning three matches. In the doubles green draw, Andrea Martinez paired with Maria Gutierrez and advanced to the semifinals with a win over No.3 ranked Monika Peciulionyte and Simri van Rooyen of UT-Arlington. Pamela Martinez and Majijee Ashrafi were knocked out by Kerryn Potgieter and Samantha van der Drift of Texas Tech 9-7. In the doubles white draw the tandem of Tanya Roberts and Kaltina Harbuzi advanced to the semi finalswith an 8-4 win over Rachel Cox and Brittany Baldy of Oklahoma. The final Lady Card to play was Manimi Kuroda, who teamed with Sammi Gottich of Baylor. The pair advanced to the semifinals of the white consolation bracket with a bye in the quarterfinals. In singles play, Gutierrez advanced to the quarterfinals of the white draw with a 6-1, 7-6 (3) win over Kuruc of Tulsa, before being knocked out by top seeded Monica Neveklovska of SMU, 7-6, 6-4. Also playing in the white draw was Kuroda, who was defeated by Andrea House of Wyoming 6-1, 6-4. In the green consolation draw, Pamela Martinez advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kristen Reid of SMU, before falling to Anne Sophie Fankam of Texas Tech. Roberts dropped her match in the green consolation draw, falling to Brooke Mills of Sam Houston 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 (5). Andrea Martinez and Harbuzi dropped their gold consolation matches, with Martinez being knocked out by Jessica Zok of Baylor 6-2, 6-1, while Harbuzi fell to Irene Squillaci of Abilene Christian 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6).
