KFDM COOP Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 Lady Mustangs ready to spike Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Long-time West Orange-Stark Lady Mustang volleyball coach Gwen Kelly-Hall has set up a very strong non-district schedule for the Lady Mustangs. Why? The Lady Mustangs welcome back a few strong players from last year’s varsity squad but Coach Kelly-Hall also wants to see the young ones get plenty of early experience before WO-S battles it out in one of the toughest 3A districts in the state of Texas. “Class 3A volleyball is so strong in our area, and state-wide too,†said Kelly-Hall. “Our district is so competitive. All of the kids get to know each other well throughsummer leagues and such. We have some nice rivalries built p in ourdistrict and they’re friendly rivals.†The Lady Mustangs have strong early tests with scrimmages against BeaumontOzen and Beaumont West Brook this week and will start the regular season next week by hosting both Port Arthur Memorial and Little Cypress-Mauriceville. “We’re going to belooking atsome good early-season tests against some good 4A teams and 5A Memorial,†said Kelly-Hall. “We’re also in three good tournaments again. We definitely want to see where we’re at early on and see where we need to improve the most. We have some time there with district starting in late Septemeber.†The Lady Mustangs will compete in the Evadale Tournament, the Buna Tournament and the always loaded YMBL Tournament in Beaumont. Kelly-Hall has some nice leadership back including Ishaneka Gant, Joneshia Sims and Miquendria Warnell. “We have some good veteran leadership in those three,†said Kelly-Hall. “We’ve got some promising youngsters as well that are fighting for roster spots. We’re looking for a good year and the kids seem excited about it.â€
