Lamar University, which will field its first football team since 1989 in 2010 and will play a full Southland Conference schedule in 2011, has made a $30 million commitment as far as athletic facilities, which includes the complete remodeling of Cardinal Stadium, a new 44,000 square-foot athletic complex and artificial turf. “Initially, we announced football coming back, there was tremendous excitement in our community,†said coach Ray Woodard, referring to the Beaumont, Texas area. “It kind of dried up a little bit as nothing visible happened for awhile, but now that people are seeing the backhoes and bulldozers and all the construction going on, that excitement is back.
