KFDM COOP
Deweyville bracing for tough Evadale squad Van Wade The Orange Leader DEWEYVILLE — A handful of young Pirates got their feet wet in a 19-6 season-opening victory over the Sabine Pass Sharks last week. Pirate head coach Russell McDaniel was certainly pleased with the effort that a youthful Deweyville squad exerted in their opener. “We had about six kids that got their first taste of Friday night lights and they didn’t dissappoint,†said McDaniel. “That first game, you always go in with a lot of questions and we had some of them answered.†The Pirates (1-0) were stingly on defense, limiting the Sharks (0-1) to just 120 total yards. Offensively, the Pirates chewed up 215 otal yards, 173 of it coming via the ground game. Senior running back Keeton Addison ran wild, gaining 138 yards on 19 carries and scored two touchdowns, one a 46-yard gallop. He also added the final knockout punch of Sabine Pass when he took back an interception 55 yards for a score in the fourth quarter. “Keeton is one of those senior leaders that teams love to turn to in big situations,†said McDaniel. “The younger ones can learn a lot from him by following his example. He’s a kid that’s been playing on the varsity since his freshman season.†“Defensively, we played really well, especially in stopping the run,†said McDaniel. “It’s going to be an even bigger challenge with the Evadale Rebels coming in here Friday.†The Rebels (1-0) totally dismantled Legacy Christian 55-0 in their opener. Evadale, which was a 7-3 playoff squad last year, received 141 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries by running back Shelby Stanley and 105 yards and a touchdown on for carries by quarterback Billy Nichols in the blowout win. The Rebels return four starters back on both sides of the ball and many from a JV unit that went 7-1 in 2008. “Coach (Mark) Williams is doing a fine job at Evadale and they make you look at a lot of different sets defensively,†said McDaniel. “Hopefully we can sustain some good drives and get our offense going. It should be an excellent game.†Other District 23-2A teams in action Friday include Danbury at Anahuac; Orangefield at Buna; Bridge City at Kountze; East Chambers at Newton; Tarkington at Hardin; and Trinity at Warren. DP#1FAN
To win , the Pirates will need to control the clock and the Rebels know that. This should be small game of the week. It's going to be a good one.
SteelerCzy
To win , the Pirates will need to control the clock and the Rebels know that. This should be small game of the week. It's going to be a good one. Should be a close game with turnovers playing a big part in the outcome, Pirates step up and defeat Rebels in a close one. Rebel Yeller
I agree with DP#1 that this should be the small school game of the week, but I must disagree with SteelerCzy and take the Rebels in this one.

True Blue
I hope to see if Evadale can throw the ball like they should. With there size and speed it should be a wide open game. And with a good passing game the running backs should have plenty of running holes. Evadale should be a very balanced team this year ,def. wont be able to load up to stop the run and I don't see any 1a team playing man up def on there big receivers, and they have a stable of running backs that should wear down Deff. come 4qr. AggiesAreWe
I believe Jasper vs. Kirbyville trumps Evadale vs. Deweyville as small school game of the week. Jasper and Kirbyville are both ranked in the top 10 SETXsports rankings.
trophyman
kirbyville and jasper should be in medium school size not small its like putting a190 pound boxer in with a 110 pound er its hard to be ranked with a school that has 2 to 3 hundred more student than Evadale so there is no classification for 1-a to be ranked

maverick
Evadale has a good group of kids this year and they are well-coached. I really look for them to make some noise in 1-A. Evadale by
